Post subject:  Need helps on choosing an amp.
Hi,

A friend of mine is looking for a recommendation for choosing between the Phonic MAX 1000 and Behringer A500. I just bought the Behringer A500, and it sounds pretty good. I don't know anything about the Phonic Max 1000. Any recommendation will be appreciated.

What will you be driving with it? Get an amp that will match the speakers and don't under power them.

He bought his 8ohms PA speakers from Ebay. That's all I know.

Besides the OHMS you need to match the POWER ratings etc.

It's near impossible to advise on the power amp choice without knowing about the speakers ...I believe

Wasn't he here before?

We tried to tell him there isn't really any way to tell on those specs. They are basically lies. Those speakers don't respond down to 32Hz, nor up to 30,000. The power specs are probably lies too.

If we had to choose from the two you mention, I would pick the Phonic. The Behringer is a studio monitor amp and has less power.

Honestly neither would be the choice if they speakers are actually 500 continuous/1000 max. Get an amp to match them. Now as I read it it says "per pair". Does that mean it's 250 per speaker?

Phonic is the best choice of the two listed. However if I were choosing for those speakers, based on when we can ascertain from the specs, I would get either a QSC Gx3, Crown XLS 402 or any amp that is going to do at least 350w at 8 ohms.

The two I listed are $100 more than either of the choices you list. However there are plenty of options from other manufacturers that will do the trick and perhaps in your budget range. Under powering them is going to shorten their life considerably.

There is no way those specs are accurate. Even the BEST high fidelity AUDIOPHILE speakers will only go up to about 21 or 22K frequency & SUBS are about the only things that can get down under 45-50 hz. So I would be willing to bet the power ratings are 1/2 of what they list. Man, what companies will fabricate to make something sound better than it really is.

It means 2 speakers are being sold.
They probably added the power ratings together as well lol. No way they handle that much.

These are like speakers for your home, and are not suitable for sound reinforcement use. The stated sensitivity is 92dB, where as professional speakers are often around 100dB sensitivity (more is better.) For example, the ~$200 Kustom KSC 215H (not what most people call "professional," but I like them) claim 98dB sensitivity. That 6dB difference (98 - 92 == 6) means, when driven with the same amount of amp power, the Kustom cabinet will produce four times (6dB) more sound energy. This is more than enough for a listener to notice, and but is not quite double the apparent volume to the listener (10dB or ten times as much sound energy.)

So basically, those speakers are suitable for your home, but as far as a bar/club rig, they are junk.

As to the issue of 30kHz signal reproduction, the tweeters in those cabinets may really be able to do that; but it doesn't matter because you can't hear that. There are some studies that suggest listeners can tell a difference if they pay close attention to A/B playback of a recording with > 20kHz content and without; but recorded music doesn't contain this material, live instruments produce it only as harmonics, and microphones don't pick it up. So as to the 30kHz thing, who cares.

As far as what amp you want to power those cabinets, I am surprised the RMS rating of 250 watts is so close to the peak rating of 500 watts; but as such, select an amp that produces at least 500 watts into an 8 ohm load. Note that with these particular speakers, my guess is they will overheat before they will be damaged by over-excursion or infrequent amp clipping; and you might even want to de-rate that RMS value a little if the club is packed with sweaty customers and the ambient temperature is 85F.

But honestly, tell your buddy those speakers are trash. Buy some different ones. Then worry about amps. :)
