Hello Everyone,

I currently use a Behringer B212a as a singer monitor. As you know, these run about 279 each. It works great, but sometimes I think it may be overkill.

I am trying to build out my system to allow for more setup options. I was thinking of replacing the singer monitor with a Gemini GX 801 8" powered speaker. The Gemini runs about 139 delivered, and puts out 250 watts.

This would allow me to purchase a second Behringer and use them as mains in smaller venues.

It would save me 140 on my monitor, money that I can spend on something that will hit the audience.

I know Gemini is a low-end speaker, and only an 8 inch at that, but do you think it would be adequate for a monitor? It has a 3 year warranty. I have seen videos of them in action on youtube and they seem like they are at least passable quality.

Depends on the venue & staging area as to how big of a monitor I will use. I currently use 2 12"/2 way floor wedges. But have been in spots where all I could fit was a Galaxy Hotspot on a mic stand.

Another option is the Yamaha Stagepess, 8" system that can be dedicated to monitors.

I HEARTILY recommend FBT Jolly8R speakers if you want an 8" with great sound AND a built in limiter- and I'm a dedicated EV man.

Thanks Joe, but the 8" is passive, and I am looking for a way to get an inexpensive powered speaker for a monitor. Something that doesn't sound like a tin can.

My current solution is a Behringer B212a @ 279, so It would have to be less than that to be worth a try.

Even the Fender 1270p only saves about 20-30 off that price. The gemini saves 140!

I'm using the B212A as a monitor as well, and fully intend to get a second one for larger venues. Personally, I feel that if its worth spending the money to get it, its worth getting something that you know does the jobe.

My personaly opinion is to save your money and get the second Behringer. In a large room you could "4 corner" your speakers, and just run without vocal monitors.

I have always been conceptually opposed to active speakers, which just removes flexibility from your system, makes the speaker heavier, and means if either the amp or speaker part of the box fail, you are out both until you repair/replace it.

What I do when I don't need a lot of sound is use Kustom KSC 15ML wedges as front-of-house. You can buy them for around $100 each. If you need an amp, there are numerous popular choices in the $300 - $450 range. My suggestions include Crown XLS 202D/402D, QSC GX3/GX5, or Behringer EP1500/EP2500. All those amps are big enough to drive one or two of these speakers per channel, so you can use the other channel for monitors, more speakers, or whatever. Some of those are suitable for 2 ohm/channel with reasonable power ratings too, and the Crown/Behringer amps can be bridged for when you have a larger application.

If you have heard a Yamaha SM15V or S115V (almost certain, these are very popular) at full rated power, those cabinets will be about twice as loud as the Kustom; and the Yamaha boxes claim 3dB more sensitivity. They also cost 3 - 4 times as much.

Separate amps and cabinets = flexible!
