Before this she only sang at home, church and...KARAOKE!

Amazing. It reminds us all not to prejudge someones singing ability by their appearance.

Alright, Barrykaraoke....I always tell my singers there is a $10 fine if they make me cry. I'm sitting here blubbering away - what an amazing talent and so humble. This is VERY inspirational. Makes me feel happy to be a middle-aged woman :!:

What a moment!

Technaically, she bottomed out on the low note and her vebrato was out of control throughtout. But it just goes to show you that "perfection " does not necessarily have to be perfect. Completely wonderful!

I love how she showed them all, and the look on Simon's face was priceless! Even he couldn't find anything bad to say! Beautiful!

Now that lady can sing! BRAVO!

I have to admit, I didn't see that coming either. Very surprising... on top, she's super nice. :)

Right there with ya Karen!

However, I will say I wasn't really surprised. As KJs I think we all see "stealth talent" all the time. Unfortunately, in todays pop culture pablum puke many folks are brainwashed into thinking only the beautiful can sing.

This is a prime example of how external beauty quickly fades, but beauty from within is eternal. Awesome performance. :bawling:

I seen this the other day. I was blown away, quite possibly the most impressive natural voice I have ever heard. I hope we hear more from Susan.

Here's a [ link to a good article ] from a UK newspaper on her person and performance.

Quote:
Susan is a reminder that it's time we all looked a little deeper. She has lived an obscure but important life. She has been a companionable and caring daughter. It's people like her who are the unseen glue in society; the ones who day in and day out put themselves last. They make this country civilised and they deserve acknowledgement and respect.

Susan has been forgiven her looks and been given respect because of her talent. She should always have received it because of the calibre of her character.

Thanks for the link. A good konk on the head for those who believe that only outward beauty is worthy of praise. Hooray for the other 99% of the human race.

I can relate to Susan Boyle, my childhood was similar. That said, I think she has a wonderful voice. Exweedfarmer, you might think she missed on some technical items, but as she never had professional voice training, I think she did better than the "pop tarts" we hear on the radio. I wouldn't presume to compare her ability with that of a trained singer. She may not be the next Celine Dion, but I think good things are awaiting her. She at least had her mother who offered her encouragement.

Actually she has had voice training in her past. Not much but I'm sure she will get top notch training now from Simon as he has signed her to a recording contract.

With everything else that has been said, the thing I like about this is that American Idol only lets young people appear. Here is an arguement for changing that philosophy.

I just hope and pray that the fame doesn't change her. The paparazzi alone would drive me batty!!!

I don't think she looks bad, and didn't like the subtext that older women are somehow not expected to have talent or try out for shows like got talent. But her voice just sounds like a basic good voice to me. Nothing amazing or uncommon. A beautiful voice, certainly, but there are plenty of amateur singers who sound like her.All the same, good luck to her, because she does seem like a lovely person.

I have watched the clip about 30 times just because it makes me feel good. One of the invisible people in the world got noticed and good on her for it. I hopes she makes millions of dollars and prince charming rides up on a white horse because that means there is hope for the rest of us.

I have to agree that it's not a great voice but it is better than almost every successful recording artist out there. You didn't really get to hear the whole performance because the crowd went crazy after she held the first bell-like note five seconds into the song. Not a great range, not particularly creative, she used a cheat for her vibrato but!!!!! What she did right.... when the music intro started all the self doubt disappeared. She didn't forget that she was telling a story and sang with the cadence of a story teller. She enunciated!!!! She sang with abandon. She sang because she she sings, with or without a microphone, with or without an audience, with or without a karaoke backing track, she sings. That came through in her performance and I think that's why it is exceptional.

Basic good voice...nothing wrong with that. I do think her voice is great...clear, steady and easy to understand her words. Much better than the warbling synthed pop tart Mariah-Britney wannabes. One thing that irritates me is the going up and down the scale over a couple of octaves on the final note of a phrase, like when some of these pop tots try and sing the National Anthem at sports events. I just want to cringe.

((((((((((((Lordy))))))))))) great to see ya

I agree, nothing worse than someone trying to bend notes and slide up and down when there is no damned need

Amen. Before Whitney Houston and other popular singers started doing the national anthem, singers would sing it straight and the audience would sing along. Now no one sings along because you can't follow the stupid vocal gymnastics of the singer. Disgusting.

I agree that too much warbling, melisma, whatever you choose to call it , and showing off range for the sake of it , can be annoying if overdone, and was not trying to belittle Susan. I just really think that if she had a stereotypically marketable image and sang the way she does, she would have likely been overlooked as good but not exceptional. (Several girls in the last couple of years who sounded much like her didn't make the cut on Idol/XFactor.)While I am happy for her, I couldn't help but see a subtext of it supposedly being amazing that someone who doesn't fit the usual image of a star can have a beautiful voice.

I give her a lot of credit for stepping up for the chance to confront this stereotype, and if she helps change the messed up way people and the media marginalize and 'make invisable' people who don't fit the look/age criteria that seems well in place for performers, then she deserves lots of props for that. Again, I didn't mean to belittle her, just wasn't blown away.....but I did enjoy her singing, and do find her more interesting than the average popstar....and definitely would rather listen to her than Britney! :)
