I own both and I prefer the sennheiser...but until I sing through a new sm58 I wouldnt say that with overwhelming conviction...
when my husband and I first started as a vocal duet (using midi blehhh) he was poised to leave the army band and they were replacing a lot of their equipment. So he bought 2 sm58s for $10 each complete with a couple of cords.
The cords have long ago gone west but we still have the mics and they still work...but they dont have the clarity the sennheiser has...what I took for warmth from the sm58s just sounds muddy when compared to the sennheiser. But like I said it could just be the shures are tired and to be absolutely positive that I prefer one over the other I would have to sing thru a brand new sm58

The mic I actually gig with is the cheapy cordless sennheiser freeport. Very unforgiving and a lot of handling noise, but I am kinda used to it...would I buy another freeport? no, I would go for another sennheiser though...just a more robust casing etc

When you screw the grille back on a 58 dont twist too tight. Then when you take it off you will twist the grill off the thread assembly.

Vicki Vicki Vicki, don't all of those of the broom set have an aversion to water? The last time I tried to clean the little foam spit guard inside a Beta 58 the foam totally disintegrated. I like the proximity effect that Shure's are notorious for as well as the fact that they are practically indestructible. I have nothing in particular against Sennheisers sound quality but I do think the 58 is more reliable.

An easy question, no doubt, the Seinheiser before the Shure :roll:

I don't think they sound alike at all, the sm58 kills your voice because it has no sensitivity where the e835 is rich and sensitive :!:

For reliabilty, well, we all know the Shure has it but I really believe this mic is over rated and past date, but a must have for it's durability and for those with powerful voices :wink:

Just Google and you'll see how much the sm58 is over rated and not ageing well...

Either one are very good mics - both about equally as good soundwise, cost about the same. I would put the Shure up a little higher as far as durability and ability to handle abuse.

Be careful not to gag looking at it. Being it was most likely heavily used prior to your buying it, I would bet it's pretty gooped up inside the windscreen. Possibly why it doesn't sound as clear. I have used them both side by side & not really noticed a great audible difference.

Having used both, and seen both used in karaoke applications extensively, I agree with Lonman that the SM58 is more durable. The two e835's my friend has replaced in the past year can back that up. As far as vocal quality goes, I have a preference for the e835 over the SM58.

Either one is a great karaoke mic. Cardioid pattern, extremely durable, sound great. The only real edge for the Shure, in my mind, is the easy availability of replacement grille/ball at a low price. The Sennheiser basket costs $18.00 per copy and is only available directly from Sennheiser. You can get SM58 clone grilles for $5.00. I like to keep them looking good, so when an SM58 basket gets dented I replace it. I bought 6 extras at audiopile.net and have used 3 in a little less than a year. Most would keep using the ones I replaced, as they aren't dented real bad. But I think it detracts from the feeling of excellent equipment.

I can only speak for the SM58s. I like the modular feature, so I can replace parts instead of a whole. Mine haven't been drop more than twice, but they help up like a champ both times with physical or working problems. I KJ 5 times a week.

I like both but will add yet another vote for the SM58 on the grounds of durability. I just haven't found another mic that takes as much abuse as the Shure. As I've mentioned before, I've seen Shure sponsored demonstrations where the SM58 has been used as a hammer, dumped in a bucket of water, swung by its cord and dropped off buildings and yet kept on working. The Shure, at least in my opinion, also is a little smoother when it comes to proximity effect (the increase in low end response as the mic moves closer to the source). The e835 tends to go from very little effect to HOLY CRAP CUT THE 250MHz NOW in a matter of a centimeter or two.

ok maybe I hold off on that till I have new ones to replace them...we have no audio equipment store in teh town I live in and being so far from the action the city big boys charge like wounded bulls...we will be paying big bucks just for a new screen...yep just looked it up a new grille will cost $29 New sm58 costs $299

After thirty-seven years of singing with either the SM58 or the Beta58 my voice doesn't feel killed. There are even some that think I have a decent voice. I have to do a couple more shows this weekend, I'll see if I can manage to limp through them with my Beta. As far as the SM58 being over rated or not aging well, my response is simply, aren't we all?
