Picked up a lucrative (but boring) contract with a Pub Group here in the UK,at the moment just DJ'ing.(I have a regular Karaoke gig at another venue too)
Trouble is the New venue insist on me plugging my mixer into a plug on the wall (standard phono),which then goes into their Marantz amp in a back room,then on to dozens of 80 amp (ish) speakers all round the Pub. (I think its so the management can keep control). However, I am considereing introducing Karaoke (If they let me)...anyone have any experience with such a sound layout before? Dj'ing is easy enough on it..but I worry about the potential vocal quality

Vocal quality will be an issue and also since the speakers are probably standard jukebox type speakers - and not PA speakers designed for live music (live vocals), let them know that the speakers could possibly blow with someone that decides to get overly excited & scream into the mic - pop!

I had a gig at a place where I plugged into their mixer, amps and speakers. These were PA speakers though. I went out of my mixer, so I can use my players, mics, and my mixer, into their board that went into their amps and speakers. It sounded incredible, and I didn't have to bring my speakers.

Yep, I totally agree with Lonman. A danger to their system in many ways. I suggest that you talk them out of it.

At the very least you will have to set up some kind of monitors around the singer's station or it will be a frustrating experience for sure. You might as well forget about it if they won't at least allow that.

But I'd go for more. Grovel and beg. Get down on your knees and swear to them you'll keep the levels acceptable if you can use your whole kit!

Just kidding. Except the part about passing on karaoke if they won't let you set it up so singers will be happy with it.

eeek I had the very same issue at the wedding I did 3 weeks ago...I was providing sound for the brides sister to sing in the church and they wanted me to plug into their system...NOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOO it sounded soooo bad. The moment you try and put live vocals thru those speakers ewwwwwwwwww

One of the venues we play at asked if we wanted to plug into their system so we said ok. Their system is awesome Meyer CQ-1 tops with Meyer 700HP bottoms.

Timber struck it lucky. Most venue systems either just bite, or have systems that may be terrific- for DJing and dance- not for karaoke.

I NEVER plug in to a house system, and have passed on venues that insisted. My rep, my tools.

Just by chance, Wig, is this venue trying to keep your fee down by using the plug in? Would that be why they may be insisting?

No,the money is good ,and the fact I only have to take my laptop and mixer could be seen as a bonus. Part of the problem is the layout of the pub is a funny U shape,and they are worried about even sound distribution. Also ,I think they have had bad experiences with previous Dj's / Kj's,and this way they can control the overall volume, and ,I guess,even turn me off if needs be!
