Was wondering if anyone could tell me what is required for making your own cdg......does it require a special burner? Does it require a special program? Does it require special discs? Just curious as I am trying to ramp up my cdg inventory. Any help would be appreciated.....thanks

Hmmm... don't you have the disks already?
I make custom disks for myself from my library to take to shows when I go out.
This is what I use:

I'd also say this is a superior ripper as well.

How are you 'ramping' up your inventory?
Special programs, yes, burners - not so much if you have the correct program, although not all burners work. Special discs, no, but a better quality is recommended. Also not all players will play burned discs.

Assuming you bought the mp3-g files and wish to burn on a disk
You can use MP3+Toolz to convert the files to bin and use Nero to burn in cdg, it works with most drive

I use the Power Karaoke tools for ripping and burning. I am pretty sure the demo versions are limited to like 1 minute per song or whatever, so you can try it to see if it works with your files / drive, but it is not useful. However, the license is cheap; I think it was about $30 or $40. http://www.powerkaraoke.com/
I made a few CDGs for friends to participate in a contest last year, and none of them had trouble with the discs not playing at the venues they went to. I even made them on LightScribe discs and lightscribed labels of the track numbers and song titles, and it seemed to work fine.
Oh and if anyone says doing the above is illegal, I really think it is fair use for my friend to say, hey, Jeff, will you make me a disc so I can use it in a contest, and me to do so. They really are my friends, not random customers; and I did not accept any money for doing it.

So certain songs are purchased, copied and passed around to friends. Imagine a few hundred people doing that...
Oh Yea, like they do on the Peer to Peer Sharing on the Internet.
Thousands of copyright songs shared.
Twist the "Fair Use Act" as you may... The Truth can only be spun one way!
Sharing is Sharing!
Can't see that being fair to the Artist!
Kind Regards,

If you are asking about disc duplication for back up, I would, without a doubt, recommend a stand alone burner like the Microboards QuicDisc WAY above and beyond using a PC.
It's built for the purpose, the drives are way more durable, and it includes built in firmware for error correction, several different copy modes, and the ability to scan and test discs in advance to avoid waste.
If you are asking what to use to copy and pirate customers and friends discs, please ignore the above.

Well, I am not an intellectual property lawyer by any means, but I think the whole point of "fair use" is so that it is okay for you to make a copy of something for your friend. Internet file-sharing is mass distribution to people you don't even know, and making copies and selling them for profit is just plain wrong; but I do not think it is wrong for me to make a disc for a friend to use in contests.

Not to change the subject of the OP, but on the issue of burning a cdg and GIVING it to a friend for a contest, as jeffw6 suggested, I'm with swoooop on this one. You own the copy that you BOUGHT, not the copy you GAVE to a friend. I don't think you would hear any problems from anyone on this forum if you said that you copied the disc for backup of an mp3+g file, and since you had it for YOUR backup already, that you loaned it to a friend to use FOR THE CONTEST ONLY, and then returned YOUR disc to you. Letting someone use something that already belongs to you is not a crime, making copies and DISTRIBUTING them to anyone to KEEP is a different story.

As I understand there was a lot of debate about this in the 80s, because movie companies were concerned that people would buy a VCR, then borrow their friend's tape, and make a copy of it. I think the result of that is the "fair use" stuff people talk about explicitly protects that behavior. It is literally to support the right to say, hey man I just got the new AC/DC tape, and dub it for your buddy to listen to. This is totally different from mass-piracy on the Internet, or commercializing it like making a bunch of copies and selling them.

Jeff, I'm afraid you are seriously mis-informed on what fair use deals with. It IS illegal to make copies of copyrighted material that is not for your personal use. If you give it to someone else, that's not personal use. If you only make one copy for one friend, that just means you're only guilty of a single count of copyright infringement but you're still guilty. There is nothing in any law that says small numbers of copies are ok but large numbers are not. The only difference is most organizations like the RIAA aren't going to go after someone for making a few copies because it's hard to discover and prove and way too expensive.
Fair use actually was first brought about in copyright discussions so that creators of new works could use pieces and references to other works for which they don't own the copyright. The DMCA expanded it further to include the ripping of music for use on other devices (the infamous "format shift" as some call it) specifically for "personal use". What you are promoting here is piracy. srnitynow is right, you'd probably be fine lending one of your discs to a friend to use for the contest, however giving them an additional copy is not OK.
Seriously this is no different than if you went into a store and bought a CD but then expected to be allowed to take a second one to give to your friend for free. You'd never feel that was right now would you? So why do you think it'd be ok for you to do that if you're the one supplying the CD media? You still didn't buy the second license which is where that $15+ for the CD goes.

I guess you are right, when they ask again this summer I guess I will suggest we get on the Chartbuster or Sound Choice web sites and purchase custom discs for them.

Sorry to have caused a disturbance on here......by me saying ramping up my inventory I meant gathering more cdg's. I am just tired of buying cdg's with songs that no one wants to sing so I wind up with useless stuff. I was just wanting to burn cdg's so that I could use every song that is on the cdg.

If this for your personal use? Or is it for your company? I can see wanting to make a compilation of songs for personal use to eliminate having to carry a few to more discs.
As a kj, you never know what is going to be useless & what is going to be hot, especially if you are doing several different clubs. I have bought discs for a couple requested songs & come to find a couple other songs became more popular than the actual songs I got the requests for in the first place. Why deny anybody songs that may or may not get used, list them up & you may get new customers because of that special song that you may have deemed something no one wants.

Think nothing of it - there are some on here that wait in hiding for certain keywords to pop up so they can start this wearisome topic again & again & again & again etc. etc. etc. I'm not sure but I think they think they are going settle this issue with their opinions.
