Has anybody else seen one of those jukebox's that takes a bribe? After you select your song a little box pops up on the screen and says " For 50 cent more, you can hear your song next". Kinda reminds me of some karaoke hosts I've seen.

Yeah, we have that jukebox our my bar. The "play it next" option is a godsend when someone has put in a playlist of 20 death metal songs in a row, which seems to be some dude every Wednesday night right before I go on.

When Cd boxes came out they were more programmable than the vinyls. One trick we had was in a country bar we would put on a couple of soul music at the start of happy hour. There would be a whole line of drunks with dollar bills clutched in their hands. It took them a long time to figure out what was going on.

That's actually brilliant! Gotta pass that one on.....

Not to hijack this thread but what do you do if the jukebox is playing when it's time to start your show? Tell the bartender to shut it off? Wait until it's done (which might be a long time depending on how much some dude just plugged in)?

Just what do you do?

The other night some guy put $5 in it and was about to get P.O.'ed when I told him that Karaoke started in 5 minutes until I said to him "Tell me what kind of music you wanted to play and I'll make sure I play some cover music in between singers", (it was kinda dead at that point), anyway he was happy with what I played and sang, I tried to keep encoring him and his gal friend to sing but they never did. The night went smoothly and he didn't complain about the $5 he lost.

I'm usually ready to go 20-30 minutes before I'm supposed to start and put a text on the TV's, that Karaoke starts at whatever time it is. So everybody in the place usually knows, when Karaoke starts and doesn't "waste" money for the jukebox. If someone still ignores the message and/or doesn't have enough common sense, well too bad. It happens occasionally.

But so far I haven't had any complains, when the jukebox shuts off and I start the show.

I do make an exception though, if there's really no singer in the place at the time I'm supposed to start and someone is playing the jukebox. But as soon as the first singer walks in, the show starts.

It was a good approach from your side though, to find a compromise with the guy and make him happy somehow.

I'll do the same as Sevarin and hold the show for a song or two if it's just me and maybe one other at 9. My eye is on the jukebox from about 8:45 on though, and if anyone walks over to it I'll let them know when karaoke starts so they don't spend too much on it.

This hasn't been a problem lately. The new jukebox has a convoluted querty data entry system that practically no one has figured out yet.

30 min before the show we are checking mics and system. At that point I have them turn the jukebox down a little. At 15 0r 10 minutes before if nobody is listening to the box it is shutdown and we start playing hot stuff at a lower volume. On the hour (do you go by real time or bar time?) I or someone will open at full volume. You want a good singer and a selection that will grab the crowd and make them sit up and take notice.

I like to open because I can say hi to someone that hasnt been there awhile, joke a little bit or make announcements. I started off one night auctioning off my LCD monitor and a couple of guys were bidding I thought in jest. A drunk was all kinds of bent out of shape because he thought he had bought it!!! I didnt do that anymore!!!

Man, a marketing savvy jukebox. Rock n Roll is dead. :(

One of our gigs has a sign taped on to the viewing window of the jukebox stating that the jukebox will be inactivated during karaoke times, and they list the karaoke start times. If someone puts money in after reading that, it's their own fault. I will also continue the style of music that's been going on the jukebox when I start my show.

Ooh I like this idea! I'm going to do this one myself once the new jukebox gets figured out.
