Hi everyone. I used to do mobile discos for a number of years, until I ventured into nightclub DJing. I fancy a change and might get back into the mobile scene, but with karaoke also. I have some custom built speakers that are big and heavy and about 15 years old now and could do with replacing them. Problem is, I no longer have a hatchback car and space in the car is limited.

So basically, I want to buy a pair of 'smaller' speakers that would sound OK for a mobile gog but would also be Ok for an odd Karaoke gog here and there - does't need to be mega powerful, you always get told to turn it down anyway.

I know I'll get shot down by the audiophiles on here, but would these sound too crap??

Those cabinets look pretty cool, but the specs do not tell you enough to know their efficiency. You will need an out-board power amp or powered mixer with those speakers as well. If space in your vehicle is a big concern, you probably want to avoid having a rack of equipment to cart around. So powered speakers or a powered mixer will avoid this.

Honestly, since you have a small budget and limited vehicle space, I would go with a pair of Behringer 12" or 15" 2-way boxes, either powered or passive, depending on if you own a mixer with a built in power amp.

if you are in the UK then get wharfedales they are cheap but they are solid and reliable and sound good.

I've got a rack mounted amp, 1000w, although nothing special (was about £100 quid from Maplin), a decent mixer (Citronic, old, but good). Would power the speakers with the 1000w amp. Particularly with karaoke, I need the quality to be half decent though.

The cabinet uses piezo type tweeter, the highs are going to sound ear piercingly harsh. Also the amp you are planning is most likely much too powerful for those cabs - what is the model of the amp? The speakers can only handle 400 watts PEAK, the RMS rating is only 200 watts. If your amp pushes say 500 watts per channel (speculating) then you will blow those speakers up first time you need to turn them up. Quality really cannot be bought that cheaply unfortunately.

Got the same amp from Maplin.....and paired it with their 400 w speakers. With a good mixer the sound is First Class...(Dont buy your speak on leads from there though). The sound is good enough quality NOT to have to turn it up to the max..(thus not blowing the speakers)

I got them dirt cheap and never gave them much credit. then i needed to mount a pair of speakers and these were all i had avalible so i stuck em in. believe it or not they sound great for karaoke and dj. the bar they are in is about 20 x 40 and they fill it well even when packed. lots of bass and really clean sounding..now that i think of it ive gotta go take those down, havent done a show there in two months.

I was at an event Saturday reunion type thing the guy doing the music had on of these little Yamaha matched systems, amp mixer combo and yamahs v10 speakers I was impressed with how good it sounded the entire system guitar center 749.00

They'd work and probably be good. The only problem is they want 500w program power. That is a pretty powerful amp. Your Maplin 1000w -- which only puts out 200w at 8 ohms -- is probably not up to the job.

The sensitivity claim on that cabinet is 98dB +/- 3. With the addition of a sub, I would not be afraid to run that cabinet with only 200 watts of amp power available. I run my full-range cabinets in an 800 watt / cabinet configuration for the weekend crowd of roughly 100 or 150 rowdy customers. It's over-powered.

Also worth noting is if the OP decides to buy a bigger amp, I think you reach the point of diminishing return for your money once you try to go bigger than about 500 watts per channel into 8 ohms, at least from the amp manufacturers I am most familiar with. You can spend like $800 - $1200 on amps that do closer to 1000 watts / channel into 8 ohms, but why do that when two bridged amps that cost $400 - $600 supply just as much power and offer you a more flexible system. Besides, one electrical circuit can only supply so much juice. :)

I have the powered version of these and they are workhorses...Micky from Canada also rates Wharfdales and karaoke for food (George) has just bought a pair as monitors and a pair for his daughter front of house...there was also another person that frequented here that bought some in singapore or hong kong...he went so far as to buy the same mixer I have as well and raves bout his setup...I am hopeless with names sorry (maybe if he reads this he will jump in)

For me they were the first step in upgrading my rig from the bargain basement rig I had...and I proffessionally have probably outgrown my wharfeys but I like them...they sound great especially now I have improved my mixer :)
