I almost posted this on PSW instead, but I know those guys will steer me toward some $1000 Whirlwind snake and then there will be a 4 page thread about something that does not matter to my question; so I figured I'd try here first. ;)

I want a small sub snake to feed my amp rack. I would like to find a product similar to the EWI PSX-12 (http://www.audiopile.net/products/Stagelink_snakes/PSX-12/PSX-12_cutsheet.shtml) but with XLR & 1/4" in parallel on the box. I can live with that EWI product if I have to, but I would prefer connector flexibility.

Actually its not that hard to modify the head end. \

On this I switched 2 xlr to male for feeding the mains. added a 1/4" for the monitor and added 2 RCA for video to the stage monitor and big screen.


My 100 foot has more sends and returns on it but I still modified it

Been running FOH for 3 or 4 years. You can hear what your system is doing and hear what the crowd hears. It is easier to adjust. Another advantage is there is no congestion on the stage and you are accessible to your singers.

The show is not about me or my host the attention should be on the singers onstage. Frankly I dont like a host onstage like they are part of the show.. I recently posted a pic of my setup. It is very clean and hardly any cables showing.

Makes it easier to setup out in the audience in front of the speakers & have a staging area up front, nicer to mix when you can hear the entire mix & not have to be running back & forth & all around the place to listen. You set your mixer, players, effects with you, them amp rack goes near the speakers. The snake goes from the mixer to the stage & the mics plug into the snake & you can send the mixers output to the amps/powered speakers.

See Ollie already answered. :) I agree I (personally as a singer) hate having the host & system right up on stage with the singer, very distracting to have people walking right up around the singer to where the host is to turn in slips or requests.

Saw the picture in the other post but didn't relate. So with the snake, I only have one long cord between me and the stage and then I plug my PA's, and sub in. What about the monitor? I'm running VGA from laptop to monitor?

The disadvantage I see to this is if the singer has a problem or question, the KJ isn't within talking distance. Can't see the customers to see their reactions.

I do like the concept of the singer on stage by themself from a "American Idol" type atmosphere.

I haven't seen any major complaints when I had shows set up like this. If there is a problem, they will typically say so over the mic - you being near them or not.

Yes you would plug the snake into the mixer for the mics & outputs for the main/sub/monitor. The box goes to the stage & you plug the mics in there, then run the speakers to their corresponding jack.
A snake isn't ideal in all clubs, some are too small to even need one, larger ones with stages or staging areas are much better suited to use one, or when you have a bunch of cables running everywhere, a snake can help compact them and direct the bulk of the run closer to the speakers & mics.

I want to sit in the audience in a proper FoH location, but it is not always practical, and my partners do not agree that it is a good idea. I am glad to read some folks on this forum are doing it, though. I want to hear the FoH as the audience does, and sit in a place where people can bring me songs and talk to me without distracting the singers.

In this instance, though, I just want a snake to go from my signal processing rack or stage snake (depending on the situation), over to the amp rack. I have 4 sends to it now and I am going to move my cross-over into the signal rack and will need more monitor sends later this year. So I do not want to have a ton of cables going to it in a disorganized fashion. Also my partners are not as technical as me and the more things I can put semi-permanent labels on, the easier it is for them to set things up without me. :)

Oh, I don't really want to modify an existing snake .. I do not know how to solder and I don't want to learn. And I know I will not end up with a professional look and durable thing if I do it myself.

I was hoping not to get something like an 8x4 but I guess that isn't a bad idea. I really want parallel jacks on the box so I will need fewer XLR to 1/4" adapters / patch cords.

You can find 25 foot VGA cables at local electronic store and just lock it up with the snake and you should be good to go.
