I was cleaning out some old files and stuff and found this old pic. It is not the Rock but I have many hours as helm and lee helm on a light cruiser. I have steered in the North sea by Scotland and into the circle. The North Sea is one of the roughest in the world and when you look out the pilot house and see this you dont dare turn the rudder for it is mostly above water!!! Those are about 10 foot swells but I have seen up to 25 foot swells. dive |

OMG that is awesome!! Ive never sailed one that big but a buddy and I wound up by accident in the way of a race like that on a little 2 man cat . They were bloody trying to capsize and kill us!!!! Notice the 2 teams feverishly working 2 bilge pumps!!! When you are fighting the seas you can get so tired you cant move a muscle. You are bruised and sore with bleeding hands and the salt water doesnt help either.. Watching them celebrate and drinking I know exactly what is going on in their minds. You say never again but after a few drinks you are discussing better ways and planning the next sail. THNX for the video!!! |

That leg of the race from Singapore to Qingdau was brutal an the boats and crews took a real hammering.. most of the yachts suffered severe damage with E3 on the verge of sinking... In the first leg on the way to Capetown, a new 24 hr record was set for a mono-hull yacht.... just under 600 NM That's averaging almost 25 knots in a sailboat for 24 hrs! While bilge pumps were no doubt being used at times, I think what you were seeing is the guys trimming the sails using the "coffee grinder" winches. |
