I have an older Peavey PV1500 power amp. I got it on craig's list for a good price. Last night I opened the case and cleaned out all the dust, it looks like new. I removed the on/off switch which is defective. Is this something I can walk in and get at Radio Shack? I'd rather not have to try to look it up on the Peavey website, I imagine it would be hard to find?

Without the specs there is no way of knowing. Have you ohmed it to make sure its bad?
How many wires does it have connected to it? Can you post a photo of it?

I have several brand new switches in the pack and prob have the one you need but give me the specs and I can tell you where to get one.

You will find the Peavey parts department phone number and email address here. From what I remember they were prompt and helpful. You will probably need your model and and serial number.

Thank you both. I think I'll just order the genuine Peavey part. I'll call them tomorrow. It's a simple black rocker switch with two blade connectors. As far as I can tell it isn't working inside the switch. the amp works fine and I could turn it on and off by removing the power cord or unplugging it. I was thinking of selling it on craig's list and I wouldn't do that without replacing the switch.

Stogie not to highjack ur thread but its settled. Now to explain my response. Little bit of humor.

I dont know how many times we would get a call in a TV repair shop and they would say its the on/off switch!! How do you know? Well you turn it on nothing happens!!! OK Name?

One call was from a lil old lady and the TV was unplugged. Plugged it in and turned it on..I marked the ticket Courtesy Call and didnt charge her. Then we got a good laugh over what Im relating to you.

I actually bought the amp knowing the switch was bad. I figured it would be simple and inexpensive to replace. I find it odd that something so simple would go bad. It turned out well because it got me to open up the case and clean all the dust out. I did this on another amp and it actually runs better now. I need to open up my Yamaha EMX512 and see if it has a bunch of dust inside.

Ok, lets file this under weird stuff. I went out into the garage and decided to fool around with the amp some more. I picked up the switch and noticed that it seemed to be clicking in both directions and I was puzzled because it seemed to be working just fine. I decided to try putting it back into the case and hook it up to power just to see if it would work properly. I slipped it back in, connected the two wires and low and behold it worked perfectly. I'm happy, but confused.

Another interesting thing I noticed when I put all the screws back in is that the heat sinks are connected to the heavy steel top and bottom covers of the case essentially making the case part of the heat dissipation system. If the amp had more power and was 15-20 pounds lighter I'd keep it. 500wpc@4ohms just doesn't cut it for modern speakers. I want twice that or more if I'm going to lug around 50 pounds of amp.

edit:I just looked it up and it weighs 32.5 pounds, but the dang thing FEELS like it weighs 50.

It is a good idea to blow the dust out, spray the controls with contact cleaner and inspect for burned components.

That switch isn't a "Genuine Peavey Part". Most of the Peavey power switches are manufactured by Marquardt Switches. I know, I used to sell them to Peavey.

The switch should have either 4 digits indicating the series, or 8 for the exact switch ie... ????.????

Here's a link: http://www.marquardt-switches.com/

If you have any questions, feel free to PM. They are very hi end with top specs- you won't find them at RS. BIG CAVEAT: beware of lookalikes, they have lower ratings all around.

If you can figure out the full number, please let me know. I either have it, and will be happy to shoot it to you ( yes, free) or I can point you in the right direction.
