I recently had a celeb (Rick Astley) who sang the song for which he was famous. He signed up for a different song but others at the show were requesting him to sing his "hit". Net result was that I made the first time exception and I let him sing 2 songs in a row. This is the first time I let this happen in over 100 shows.
Net result is this blog by one of my regulars, in attacking me for breaking the "rules of karaoke".
Question 1 what would you have done?
Question 2 is this just sour grapes, as most of the people at the show were excited to see him sing his hit.

Just goes to show you can never make everyone happy at karaoke.

You can never make everyone happy with anything.. it's just a fact of life..
Evidently, folks don't have any other more serious issues to get hung up about.
Try not to worry yourself too much over it.. once they find something else to complain about, it will be like last Monday's news.
If you didn't let Astley sing 2 songs in a row, then some would bound to (@$%!) about that too..

My belief is if its not a "general" practice of letting people sing more than one in a row it would be fine & hey lets face it theyre YOUR rules YOU can bend them if you want to ! The guy is famous for gosh sakes ! At YOUR karaoke show ! Wow ! Good for you !! We once had a guy from The Gap Band stop by ours sad but I cant even remember his name & at the time only had one Gap Band song in my library but he didnt even mind he didnt want to sing it anyways he sang something else.. . The heck with her whiney a**

It read to me like he was merely commenting and not attacking pre se but who can really tell I mean actually because you see he runs his sentences together in very long six column strings like I'm trying to do here but cannot pull off very well because it's simply not my style.

I normally don't allow it, but would have for him or any artist that had a couple of top 10 hits. Heck, one of my regulars buys me a 32oz. Heineken for singing "Never Gonnna Give You Up", every week. Would have been nice to hear the real guy for once.
One of my good friends is friends with the lead singer from Dramarama. At a private party I was doing, nobody knew who he was. I sing that song "Anything, Anything" from time to time. I didn't tell anyone at the party who he was, then had him sing it. It was awsome. You could hear everyone whispering about how good this guy sounds. I then announced that it sounded so good, due to him being the guy who wrote it, and performed it.
Sounds like a natural born sniveller to me. The hell with the BLOGer.

Getting Rick-Rolled at your own gig: Priceless!
Screw them. Any singer of this renown, even a one-hit-wonder who walks into my gig and wants to sing a few tunes can certainly double up. I don't care if it's Rick Astley, the "Right Said Fred" guy or those "Proclaimer" twins!
I guarantee you everybody in that bar talked about it at the water cooler the next day.

Yah I agree with bill about the guy who has no punctuation I don't think he was ragging on your 'breaking the rules' but rather just pointing out...toward the end they seemed to be blaming Rick Astley for his karaoke faux pas... I wouldn't give it a second thought, Dr. Fred. Sour or not, a grape is a grape! You're on YouTube!
Hey, I expected more of Mr. Astley, frankly, singing wise. But fun nevertheless to have a celeb pop in.

In Rick's defense he had been drinking for 4 hours (at least) when he sang the song.
In any case it is quite often difficult without an experienced cameraman and good equipment to get a quality recording of a live event.

Karaoke is not a religion.
The host does not have to have a set of morals more stringent than the pope.
There should be no rituals as they have in cults and no variance from venue to venue.
Rules if needed should apply according to the format and entertainment value of the show.
Rules should not be borne out of rituals.
Shows vary from one extreme to the other and that is the way it should be for what works for one will not work for another.
Do not expect rituals or expect a standard set of rules at my show. It is enetertanment for all and not a karaoke church.

When we had a famous Canadian band at our show, they sang their turns and just about every singer wanted at least one band member to sing with them. The guys were very obliging and everyone went home with some special memories.

If Martina McBride walked in she would be treated the same as any singer. However I do retain the right and the venue has the right to shift to a Martina format which would probably only last a n hour. My format is dynamic and constantly changes as situations demands. I am not locked into Rituals, I am there to provide entertainment and put bodies in seats. I can do that with straight karaoke or a few good singers. I do not judge the size of the crowd by number of singers. If I had 30 singers and the rest of the chairs empty I am doing something wrong..

It seems the blogger was ribbing you good-naturedly about letting Rick do a twofer.
Without hesitation if a real live celebrity made an appearance at a karaoke gig I was hosting, I'd let them sing 2 or 3 songs in a row. As for the rotation rules, what's more entertaining for EVERYONE in the crowd...hearing Rick Astley or some other Top 10 recording artist sing a couple of songs, or asking the crowd to wait for 10 more minutes?

It seems it would be a nice way to honor someone who actually put the song in the catalog. Heck, I might even buy them a PBR.
So what else did he sing, or is it top secret?

Call me ingorant, but I wouldn't have known him by face or name... though, of course, I recognized the song when I listened to it. And I agree, I would have never thought him to be a "famous singer" just by listening to that.
I wouldn't worry about the blogger, must not have much of a life.
Your show, your choice, and I'm sure lots of KJ's would have done the same.

Again, would be depends on the audience & how many singers I had - opposed to how 'famous' someone was that will never come in again to the ones that follow your show regularaly.
