Can any of you Stateside KJs put me straight on this one?
I have just discovered the Rodeo Song by Gary Lee and Showdown.
What does "alamand" mean in the lyric?
i.e. "Alamand left and Alamand right"

I think that I understand the deep spiritiual message in the rest of the song.

It's a square dancing step. But I have no idea the origin of the word!

Allemande Left

Movement:
Dancers face their corners and turn by the left forearm. Releasing armholds and stepping forward, each dancer ends facing his partner.

Found it:

An allemande (also spelled allemanda, almain(e), or alman) (from the French word for "German") is one of the most popular instrumental dance forms in Baroque music.

Additionally some of the close embraces and turns of the original Allemande were carried over to Square Dance with the moves "Allemande left" and "Allemande right" in which couples hold hands and turn around each other.

LOL we're talking about The Rodeo Song here and you're worried whether Allemande is going to offend someone :D

Haha my sentiments exactly ! That song isnt even in my book even though I have the cdg its on..I just would rather not have anyone come up to me & ream me out b/c they thought it offensive after someone sings it. We just had a whole group get offended at one of our shows after someone sang another song on that disc called A**hole.

Well I can tell you up here in cattle :cowboy: country if Allemende (left or :fright: right) with a steer - you get arrested...

This song doesn't get sung too often at shows I go to...there is this one guy  who seems to sing this sometime after midnight and the kids love it...I wonder who that is?

Sorry Guys, my comment about not wanting to offend anyone with the "Allemand" word was "tongue in cheek" considering what other stuff is in the lyric.
Taking Karaoke Kelley's point about the "A**hole" song, I agree fully with the sentiments that it is very offensive.
I don't know whether it's down to the difference in people's sense of humour on both sides of the "pond" but with all it's "F" words, I still find The Rodeo Song to be humourous rather than offensive.

In our part of the world neither song is considered offensive. They are sung on and off all of the time.

By the way if you were to "tongue and cheek" with a steer - that too would get you arrested...

I'va actually been known to sing this sone at my shows every once in a while. The biggest key is to make sure you have the right crowd for it. Do it in the wrong setting and it'll offend people and send them to the doors. Do it in the right setting and it can be a big hit. The last time I sang this song was two weeks ago. The bar was having a big bash for cinco de Mayo so the place was packed with a lot of people who'd had plenty alcoholic lubrication. The whole damn place went nuts and was singing along when I broke out the Rodeo Song, so in that setting it worked. I certainly wouldn't try it in some upscale martini bar downtown.
