Someone stole a tambourine Saturday night. In the past yr I've had 2 maracas, 3 monkeys and now a tambourine stolen. I think it is more the souvenir thief I have a problem with than a real thief.
It always happens on nights when I have a lot of 20 something newbies in the bar. Aaarg !
Anyone else deal with these souvenir thieves?
Once they stole a toilet seat cover. It was funny at the time I heard it, but I'm sure the bar owner didn't think so.

3 monkeys? Stuffed monkeys I hope. Thievery seems to be a part of the business I guess, although I haven't had too much trouble. The only thing I've ever had messed up was my plastic guitar.
They are cheap to replace, but I've got better things to do with my money and time than replace something because some drunk thought it was funny to bite a hole in the guitar. I let him know that not only was that not funny, but he was off the mic for the rest of the night.
Haven't had the problem since.
I also get my guitars from prank.com now too.

Tambourines are about $5 when I buy them on sale through Musiciansfriend. The first one I had lasted 3 yrs before it broke.
I told the bartender that night, so he could keep a look out. He suggested having everyone jump up and down before they left the building.

Hard to believe isn't it. Alcohol-induced behavior.

I don't have accessories for that reason.
What I've had a problem with lately is mic screamers and cord swingers. What is with that? Absolutely nothing for the last year, then WHAM a run on it for the last 3 weeks....

I figure that if stuff is going to get stolen, I may as well put my contact info on it, and I do.

I don't use Party Favors, per say, if I do bring something of that nature it's usually a give away type item anyway. Although about 2 yrs. ago I did have a book stolen. I don't know what someone would do with my book, unless if was a fellow KJ trying to match my song selection. I don't know I thought it was a strange thing to steal.

I had a single page stolen recently. No clue why... had a partial list of creed but can't remember the rest of the songs on the page. I just reprinted it and replaced it into the book.

Babs, do you have someone at the shows with you on a regular basis. If so, have them keep an eye on your toys. If someone leaves with one have your person to remind them nicely to return said items. I do it at our shows and never a problem.

I'm the only kj in the area that uses props, and I continually have things stolen. Its a pain to replace stuff all the time. Yeah, it's cheap enough, but when I have over $200 in $3-$10 props and potentially lose one or two a gig, it can get expensive.

I've had a few blow up guitars stolen over the years, so decided to write in large marker "Don't Steal Karaoke Guitar" on the back of it (blank space), but naturally...it got stolen too!
Another show had their tambourine and maracas stolen but found it it was from a singer that hated them because they ruined his songs. Perhaps you had a tambourine hater Babs?
Any instrument that makes noise would distract my prima-donna singers, and even a pro harmonica player got dirty looks and was asked to stop playing. ugh. Hope you find out who stole your stuff!

I hate tambourines at a karaoke show; especially when there were no tambourines in the original song. I do enjoy a good harmonica player to join me when I sing Roadhouse Blues or Piano Man though.

I have to say the regulars would pitch a fit if they caught someone stealing especially a monkey. All my monkeys were given to me by patrons.
I try to only have the most recent monkeys that were given to me out because the owner complains so many monkeys is a fire hazard. That's another story by itself.
I only seem to have things go missing when I have a crowd of young newbies which is rare.
It does make me feel better to think someone had such a good time they wanted to bring home a momento.I guess to stay positive about it I'll think of it that way.
* I make sure tambourines and maracas are used appropriately, so they don't distract from the singer. I've never had a problem with that. In fact I have several people ask people to use them during their songs. It's affectionally called the percussion section.

I have blow up props disappear all the time. I just make sure I have plenty on hand. Sometimes someone will ask if they can keep it, sure, then blow up another.

I actually had a woman bring her own tambourine to one of my shows a couple of weeks ago. She wouldn't sing, but played the damn thing during almost everyone's song. She finally had to be told by the management to cool it. She also wanted to get on stage and use it when someone was singing. When she was nixed, she was quite upset. She somehow had the idea that karaoke was an open stage free-for-all.
I'm all for blow-up props and such, but NO TAMBOURINES FOR THE DRUNKS.
As far as stealing-- my main gig had their faucet handles stolen from the bathroom sink once.
