Hi All,

It's not common here in Singapore to do the KJing gigs that I see most of you do. Aside from private parties or office team building events, I think I need to expand and do what you guys do to get a more regular cash flow. Can somebody email me how you approach the bar owners? What's the deal like? A sample contract maybe ?

If ever, I could be the first to do it here

You definately need to plan this out first. From what you're saying I gather in your area no one is doing karaoke in bars? Deciding what you will charge may be hard if you have nothing to go on. Here in the states the fee for bars tends to much less than private events. This I think comes about because it is a steady gig for most, so one of your goals maybe to approach a bar owner with the idea of doing a show once a week for them. I base my price on how many hours, how far I may need to travel, and if I am locked in for a certain amount of time at least once a week. Some people offer to do the first show free. I have never done this, but it is a much better idea than offerring to lower the price to start. Normally what ever fee you initially get is what the bar will insist on paying from there out.

Approaching the bar owner in person is the best way. Call ahead and set up a meeting. Be prepared by bringing information on what you are willing to provide. Try to look as professional and prepared for the meeting as possible.

From my experience it is hard to get a venue owner to sign a contract. I'm not sure how things would be there for you. Another problem here is most contracts are hard to enforce if they are broken. I like to at least get the venue owner to sign an agreement. It just lays out expectations by both, so there isn't any confusion later on. It isn't a legal document, so most venue owners will sign it with the understanding it isn't a legal contract, but it is a way to make sure both parties understand what their obligations are.

Don't get me wrong I think a contact is a great idea if they will sign one.

Well let me be the first to tell you how I do it. I took out a phone book, addressed an envelope to a lot of the bars and taverns in the yellow pages, stuffed the envelopes with my flyers and 4 of my business cards. My flyer offered them a special discount for the first show to give me a tryout. I did this about 4 weeks ago. Last night I received a call from the newest place in town asking me to come see him then, have a few beers with him, see his new set up (last night he opened a 2nd section) and talk about locking me into a weekly gig!. So that's what the mailings got me.

When I was first ready to try public shows, I called a few bars, left my name, number, email and website and one called me back several weeks later and I did a show for them. They never asked me back and last I heard the owner had one of the bartenders running one of the owner's old karaoke set ups.

The next thing I tried was going to the bars, giving them my card and flyer and letting them know I was available.

Bottom line, they won't know you aren't out there if they don't see you. Make yourself visable to them!

If you have a few places already in mind, try talking to the manager in person. Best time is between lunch and happy hour around here... 2-4 PM. Babs is right about contracts. Don't scare them with that yet.

If you have any friends who sing, try setting up a free audition to give them a taste of what you have. I know that some will say never do this, but if they don't know you and don't know karaoke that's the best way to show them.

Karaoke is a popular thing down here, but most of the bars which offers Karaoke would of course already have a simple karaoke setup. I guess it's up to me to tell the owner of a pub which doesn't have one to think about putting one, and that would be me

I'll try the short list (personal approach) first to see how it goes. I'll update back when I get any gigs.
