I have a JVC XL-MV55 3-drawer. It is starting to skip during play. I want to clean the laser myself but I want to know the proper way.
Thanks,

The optics in that is not as rigid as in other commercial machines. In fact if you are blowining that unit out with compressed air do not blow directly on the optics.
The pads saturated with alcohol will work but you can not apply pressure on the eye. Very carefully drag the pad across the eye in different directions softly and with a light pressure not pushing it down. Several wipes are necessary and with the unit turned off look at the eye in light and you can see if there is nicotine or a film on it.
Then use the pad to clean other parts such as the tray. The rails that the optics assembly rides on should be clean. Some use a light light light film of white grease but too much is worse than just a clean rail.
This holds true for CD drives also.

I used to clean my computer CD-ROM's with a wound tight Q-TIP and alcohol, very gently. I am not sure what pads you are talking about though.
I have lithium grease. Will that work for the rails or is that what you are referring to?
I also have an old Pioneer Lasor Disc system. Can I use alcohol on it as well.
Thanks,

So many jokes...so little time.
I was always told to clean my "laser" with lot of soap and water. Especially if it had been somewhere new that night.

I'm the girlfriend/partner--he took the thing apart and couldn't get to/find the laser. Nothing was thrown or broken in the process, however.

He did and it worked but he didn't want to admit it because he knows most on this site believe they do damage. We are in a smoking place so we suspect that is the culprit. It went bad on us in the middle of a our biggest crowd ever but it only took a few seconds to switch to the back-up Pioneer player and it carried the show. I love the old Pioneer player.......plus the boyfriend says it is easier to clean.
We used to have a place that serviced players an hour away but now the closest is 6 hours away and we ended up just sending the Pioneer to Washington when it needed servicing.

Does anyone truly care? As said, it took just a few seconds to switch the disc to the other player and all went well.
We have just started out and already had a disc collection and player so we didn't add a laptop et al to our starting expenses. My boyfriend used to sub-host when computer karaoke first came out and it had bad sound and lots of glitches. We realize that has been cleared up since but even though he lives practically attached to a computer, computer karaoke has never grabbed him. He uses his personal laptop at our show to play bumper music and keep a master list of our songs but not to run the karaoke as we would want a seperate computer for that. I suppose we will end up computer and I would like to do it now when we have less discs to transfer but that isn't it the budget at the moment. We also live off the grid and would have to run the generator constantly to transfer our discs so it isn't in the cards right now.
We are in a small venue and if we lose singing time, it isn't due to discs being slow but more often to that last pool shot, being in the bathroom or making out in the parking lot when their name is called. No need for US to be in a rush.
In our immediate area there are 6 KJs and 3 are disc, 3 computer. The 3 computer shows are pirates, although that is just a weird coincidence. One of the disc based is in the process of coverting to computer and they lost their entire song data base. They took their laptop to a computer shop and were told their files were lost forever. My boyfriend got it back for them in 10 minutes so he is not afraid of technology. We are just disc-based at this point in time. Hope no one loses any sleep over it.

No need for US to be in a rush. With all due respect, I have heard disc-based KJs say this over and over again. And over and over again I have been to disc-based shows that are so slow that after a while I don't go back. I am not the only one, either. There are some shows that have died in our area because people have gotten used to the speed of computer and don't like having the "bumper music" cover up the dog-slowness of the disc-based hosts. I am sure that a few exist, but I don't know *any* fast disk-based hosts in our area. They all seem to end up playing filler music 20% of the time. It seems that both the host and the singer think because music is playing they can just take their time.
Also, I have seen hosts completely lose touch with their crowd. They may think that their people don't care, but word gets around. People can listen to CDs at home. They don't come out to listen to filler music.

Our filler music lasts a few seconds--it only covers the time that it takes for the next singer to take the stage--not to cover changing discs because the next disc is already in and ready to go. We don't HAVE to be slow. Sometimes we start off with 4 singers and there is really no need to push the speed when THEY want to be laid back and just enjoy themselves. When we had a rotation of 20 on Memorial Day we cranked it. When it is just the 4 guys who want to sing "He Stopped Loving Her Today," why should we make them be waiting at the bottom of the stage to jump up as soon as the first guy finishes? One of them is 90 years old. Maybe we should hit him with a cattle prod to get him up faster.

Well, as long as you don't hold up the speed of the assembly line.....variations, spontaneity and individual needs will NOT be tolerated.

You may be the holy grail I have yet to see, the fast disk-based host. But part of it is indeed on the singers. Some people may want to finish their conversation, take a swig of beer, and saunter to the stage when they are good and ready. But not everybody wants to wait while they do that.
If you just have an average of one minute between songs, you have gone from 15 singers per hour to 12.
One reason CompuHost -- and other hosters with a next-singer list -- works so well is that people know where they stand. If the host religiously says who is next when they call up a singer, I suppose it can have the same effect. But the scrolling list works extremely well. We have people leaning toward the mic as the previous singer ends.

At the small neighborhood dive, we don't have enough singers to cause the number of songs lost per hour to be an issue. They are more likely to run out of songs to sing first and if not, we will stay until they are sung out. Karaoke is an attraction there but mainly they are there to be social. If we move up to the big city, we will have a different style of hosting for that venue.
Well, excuse me, I have to go attend to my boyfriend's laser.

I can safely say that I am just as fast as a computer show. I do more work, but I press the play button as the next singer is walking up and I will raz them if they don't make it up on time (the ones I know).
I will say that sometimes I pull the wrong disc. I might have wasted 5 minutes last month. Then again, I will stay late if I need to also.
If a disc based show is slow, then they do not know what they are doing. I can run a show from 1 drawer and only increase my time buy 3 or 5 seconds and still be ready before the singer comes to the stage.

A few seconds here, a skip there. No big deal? I'll pass. Maybe once I am established and not looking to impress, I won't mind the glitches. Right now, I strive for perfection always knowing it's impossible but improvement can always happen!
And the scrolling marquee, whether any disk based kj wants to admit it or not, it is a very handy tool that singers can take a look the screen and tell how long they have before singing again.
As far as sound goes? Trust me, my set up now sounds amazing, even with digital music!
