Active speakers = JBL. Nothing finer.

Where are you playing that you need 400 watts? Have you considiered the 315s? I've used them for months now, and they rock. Everyone compliments me on my system all the time.

If you're looking for some additional power, look at Berhinger. $279 B212A is 400 watts, and isn't a bad secondary speaker to add sound to different area of the room. I use one as a monitor, and it kicks butt.

Kenpat, take al isten to the new QSCs....I haven't heard them but our GC dude swears by them. I have the SM350s and the SM450s and I love them... and if I ever replace, I'm going to consider the QSCs with the matching sub, which is very compact. Just a thought.

I second Karen's suggestion. I've been using mackie srm450s for about 7 years now and never a problem- just clean and powerful sound. I hear, pardon the pun, that the new 450 are better, although i can't confirm that.

On this site a lot of the more technically minded individuals are recommending the QSCs, and i would hope that at $1000 each or so, they would sound much better. Also the cabinets are 15's instead of 12's like the mackies, but i've not demo'd them yet.

..just my .002. :)

I guess the original 450s had a therm issue - particularly when used as live monitors in a band situation - they'd get hot and shut down. We don't give ours that kind of a workout for sure, but apparently they fixed that therm problem in the newer ones.

Then again there's the Yorkville NX speakers and subs. They blow away pretty well all the competition.

If they were in kp's budget, I would highly recommend them personally. Don't know about the subs but I'm sure they are amazing.

thanks Karen, I got a price of 519 at gc for the 450v2 does that sound about right, I wonder about the comparision of the jbl 515 or the mackie 450v2...I think yorkville and qsc are a little out of my price range.. I just sold my complete system, I'm quiting, I would like a system for private parties .. I have a mackie cfx12 mixer and
a laptop plus some other stuff, I'd like to do maybe 10 private parties a year, plus I'd have a nice home system, what do you think.....

My personal opinion is that Mackies do a better job in dispersing highs and gave increased clarity over a wider area, while the JBLs provide a bit stronger bass if you're not using a sub. So pick your poison. It's pretty easy to audition both. Any Guitar Center will have them.

That's a good price on those 450s. I didn't realize GC would discount them off MAP that much. I'm actually more of a Yorkville guy myself though and would pass on both.

Edit: I'll add that the 515 had a bit of that "scooped mid" sound typical of two way 15" cabs that was not there with the 450s. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. I often pull mids back at the board in small spaces. Especially if I didn't bring a sub.

Really either of these speakers would work very well for karaoke in private party situations.

Bill is correct in the dispersion issue with the 350s and the 450s - in a side-by-side, we opted for Mackies because of that. A fuller sound through the entire range. We use an active sub with both sets. Personal preference I guess. I'm very happy with ours and receive compliments for the clarity and evenness of the sound.

There are no bad choices here. I too am frequently complimented on the clarity of the sound with the JBLs, and how nice the vocals are. I don't use a sub.

My only thought on the matter is money, and it seems to me that the JBLs are the better deal.

Could be - at the time I went purely on what sounded good to me. As I recall, when we compared, the price wasn't THAT much different but that was over a year ago. I just enjoy great sound and apparently was willing to spend more than I needed to to get it? I don't know, I'm happy with my stuff.

Me too! :D As I said, I don't think either choice is bad, and at the end of the day his system will rock!
