When using my laptop, the sound is just not as clear as when using my desktop. It sounds a little faint and far away. Do I need an external sound card? If so, can you recommend one?

Any advice will be great.

Lexicon Alpha. Someone here mentioned about a week ago there was a site with a big discount on this item.
