This Saturday I will be doing karaoke as usual in the bar, but outside in the parking lot they are doing a benefit for breast cancer. It will be a $20 charge to be outside for the benefit. They will have a band, 50/50 raffle, free food and a give away raffle, but they have to pay for drinks. They will start at 7pm and I start at 9pm.
I'm trying to think of ways to contribute. The people in the bar don't have to pay the $20 because they are keeping it seperate. It will be more than obvious though what is happening outside and I'm sure some of my karaoke people would like to contribute, but would like to stay inside for karaoke.
I thought maybe I could charge a $5 donation to the cause for anyone who'd want to sing 2 songs in a row or put my tip jar out for donations. I don't know, what do you guys think? Should I do nothing?
I'll probably have a small crowd. Saturdays have been slow lately and I'm sure I'll loose some crowd to the benefit, so I don't think people singing 2 songs in a row will be a problem.

I did a benefit for abused kids a few years back. This was the one & only time I accepted bribes for karaoke. The bigger the donation, the faster you got up - we had some $50-100 donations. We raised $5000+ in 4 hours. Someone even paid for our bar manager to sing - and she doesn't, but for $500 donation, she choked up & sang for the cause.
Now granted this wasn't during regular karaoke & everyone KNEW in advance it wasn't a typical karaoke style rotation. Maybe you can use the 7-9 timeslot to do a one & one time only - largest donations go first type show>??>

We had a regular die of epileptic seizure a couple of years ago. A very sudden and sad situation. A lot of us were involved with the family outside the bar, but what we did during karaoke was put a large jar out and several of us made visible contributions to prompt the room. And I announced it all night of course.
I kept it separate from karaoke and I think that was the best approach. Yours may be different according to what fits your room though Babs.

I used to do Mem day outside. The host bar would hold peroidical raffles. We would have a ball and I would announce OK put a dollar in the pot and I will sing Satin Sheets! Put $5 in and I will do it with a wig!!! Get the singers in the spirit and it gets nuts but people are donating.

Jam you crack me up ! The name of the benefit is "Save the Hooters", no kidding. You'd fit right in.
I love all the ideas, but the one that gets my attention is having our bartender sing for money. He has worked with me at karaoke for 5 yrs and refuses to ever sing. I bet I could get a huge donation for that one.

Again, donate your time for the cause & make it a donation only time between the 7-9 period. Even the bartender that wouldn't normally sing will most likely do it for the cause. My manager WILL NOT get up there on her own but definitely did for the cause - now granted she had ALOT of helpers behind her that was probably her saving grace! If you can make your non-singing bartender sing for the night, MAKE SURE you have a group behind him/her but the bartender actually holding the mic!

Something I've used at benefits before, and it went over real well is Kamakaze with donations. Anyone in the room can put anyone else's name on a slip with a 5 dollar donation, you call the name on the slip, they can either sing the song picked, or buy out of it with a 10 dollar donation, with all money going to the cause. Last time I used this we raised almost 2 grand, and had a blast. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks Lon ! The benefit outside starts at 7pm. I don't start until 9pm, but I understand I should keep it to a time limit.
Scotty it makes total sense.

It would make sense if the band and I didn't overlap. I'm not going to setup tear down and re setup.

What I find funny is that you are trying to find ways to help the CAUSE but you aren't even willing to move your equipment around to help the CAUSE. I guess you want everyone else to sacrifice for the cause but not if you have to do a little extra grunt work.
I would suggest that you show up at 7PM and start your show early as your donation to the CAUSE. Charge everyone a few bucks to sing a song with the knowledge that all of the money is going to the charity.

The band played from 7pm until midnight. I worked from 9pm until 2am. I wasn't going to tear down and setup outside at midnight. That doesn't even make sense to do. The band actually didn't even end up being in the parking lot. They were in the back in the sheltered beer garden.
Anyway, the night went well. I raised a little money for the cause. I donated my tips and what ever money I raised using karaoke. It was fun and the benefit fund raisers were thrilled. They didn't expect any money from me and were very grateful. Thanks for all the ideas, they were very helpful !
