Hey all,

I'm new here so please forgive me if this is out of line but... Does anyone know if or where I can find karaoke or just vocal removed music by the band "Old Crow Medicine Show"? I have tried removing the vocals myself but it never seems to work as it should. (Maybe because I've never invested in expensive software)

There is definately not a karaoke version of this song. If I didn't need the words on the screen, I would use my mixer to remove the vocals. It works pretty good. There are several products that remove vocals software wise. There are several products that remove vocals, but I am not familiar with them. I don't think any of them are very expensive. Probably around $30.

The idea behind vocal removal is pretty much the same regardless of the quality of the equipment used.

For a lot of tracks it just does not work at all.

The vocal removal depends on the vocals being in the center (equally left/right channels) and the other instruments being in either one or the other channel. Vocal removal inverts the left channel and adds it to the right, removing any sound that is equally in both channels.

In practice it can reduce the vocals about 10 decibels while leaving the other sounds pretty much constant. Outside of the mid range, different songs may need some adjustment, either increasing or decreasing the highs and lows. Vocal removal is hardest for singers/songs where the singer sings over a wide range.

That is the "standard" way bands are set up and recorded, but in music people don't always follow the standard. Sometiemes with vocal removal instruments are removed, or the vocal track is not.

If the song had any appreciable level of effects (like reverb) done to the vocals then you are probably going to fail on the vocal removal.

Finally it is important to have as high a quality recording as possible before attempting. MP3 may have enough quality for the human ear to not notice the difference but that simpification of the sound reduces the ablity for voice reduction considerably.

If entering on this approach, test out some songs on a cheap vocal removal system (many soundboards can do it) and if the vocal removal works for your song then it may be worthwhile to get a "better" software or system for the removal. However if it does not work at all on the cheap system it probably will not work on any system. Most failures depend on the song not on the system used for VR (but that can improve the results noticably).

There is no expensive software that does the job well enough to justify the expense.
