Post subject:  Primer on selecting speakers
where do i start in trying to determine what speakers to purchase. Just recently went from a karaoke system to digital thru my pc. i purchased an acesonic km-111 mixer and am looking to purchase speakers (upgrading from my previous stereo speakers). The sound is distorted thru my old stereo.

Btw, we are not KJs. Just home karaoke parties and family reunion type stuff.

Speaker....Monitor.....PA.....what the F is the difference???

Nice way to ask :roll: ! But I will anyway. Speakers are what you hear the overall sound through. Monitors are what are aside from the mains that only the singers here. The PA is the overall system itself.

You typically want to match the speakers to the amp you are running, since you failed to mention what you are running for amplification, it's kind of hard to recommend a speaker for your needs.

Actually, the home stereo system is how I used to "do" Karaoke (with a great old Pioneer Karaoke player). The sound was great (no distortion) when running it through my surround sound stereo system. I used a mixer to merge the tracks (from the K player) with vocals (mixer mic inputs) and sent the output to my stereo. I am looking to get whatever I need to run a "personal" show now that I have transferred the discs to digital files on my PC. As an experiment, I bought a small mixer with a USB port (the old mixer is antiquated and didn't have one) and ran the sound through my stereo. Now the sound is distorted. Not sure why...the experimental factors are that the files are now digital and that the mixer is possibly crappy. I guess I need an amp, mixer (with mic inputs) and better speakers. This would not be for public airing, just at home with friends. I bought Sligos Karaoke Professional to run the "show." Just need the appropriate equipment now. Looking to spend no more than about 1000 for everything else. I apologize for not knowing the proper lingo to communicate well technically. Bear with me!! BTW, I'm a gal.

You can definitely make a karaoke rig for home use with $1000. I do not know if the mixer you have is just cheap junk, or if you are clipping somewhere. I doubt the problem is the audio files themselves; play them through regular PC speakers and see if the sound is still poor.

The mixer is the acesonic km-111. It was cheap ($49). The sound of the digital files is fine thru PC speakers. My stereo is very old but, like I said, still sounds great when I play disks on the Pioneer Karaoke machine.
