Post subject:  D Day

One of the most impressive ceremonies is manning the rails while entering port and listening to the saluting batteries.

It was in the mid sixties and we were the first American warship to enter Cherbourg France since D Day. We tied up starboard side to an old dirt pier. There were hundreds of old Frencmen standing at attention. Part of the ceremony is playing the host countries anthem then ours.

The old vets stood there with tears streaming down thieir hot and dusty faces. In fact everybody had tears for it was a very special event. At the time the liberal press bak home was telling everybody that nobody had any respect for the American flag anymore. We know different because we were there in the real world.

There are very few vets left from that day but I weep and salute you just like the rest of the world does to this day.
