Supercharged, I have a Boss MA15 micro monitor, 15 watts, 5.25" speaker . Bought on Ebay as they're ancient now.

I sold an extra power mixer I had to a fellow DJ friend of mine and started to think of buying a SMALL powered monitor with the cash. So for UNDER $300 I see a few choices .. A few Nadys which I believe MOST will give thumbs down to There is a NEW Behringer which again based on what I've seen here ...no one will reccomend SO it comes down between a FENDER http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=601713 And a MAckie : http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=601064 Not too worried about the $50 difference -- The Mackie seems SMALLER and more personal for Karaoke ..but I beleive somone HERE uses the Fender and likes them. It's not a powered speaker, but if you're looking in the $300 range the EV Zx1 would make an awesome monitor. It doesn't require a huge amount of power either. It puts out a lot of sound and can cut through the mix. It's also nice and small. I love mine and get lots of compliments on my sound. I don't know if that helped any? |

Jam, I've actually used both but found I didn't care for either. Of the two, I think the 1270P is the better option if you plan to use it as a floor wedge. The Mackie works better when mounted to a pole or mic stand of some sort and as you noted is a smaller speaker. Ultimately, the Mackie is engineered better so if you're looking for the best sound, the Mackie would get the nod from me. I actually ditched both in favor of a Podium Pro Audio PP802A that I bought off ebay for $130. It's a 200 Watt 2-way with an 8" and a horn. It's a little more substantial (Physically and Audibly) than either the Fender or the Mackie which is what I was looking for. The only issue with it that I've found is that the cabinent isn't shaped well for operating as a floor wedge, so I have to prop it a bit to get it at the right angle. Podium is definitely not a name brand and the sound quality is about on par with the Fender 1270. It's a plastic cabinet and it sounds like it, but it does get the job done as a vocal monitor. It's biggest limitation (partially due to the 8" woofer I'm sure) is in frequency response at the low end. I don't think it gets any lower than around 80Hz, but for a floor monitor, this isn't necessarily bad. I'd rate it as better than the Nady's about even with the Fender and Behringer and a little below the Mackie in terms of sound quality. In terms of volume, it's at the top. |

In the past I've never really used a MONITOR. My new gig is outside and speaker placement has me thinking I could use a SINGER monitor. Not looking to cover a full stage but more of a personal monitor. |

I use the 1270P and very happy with the monitor. It's small but puts our a pretty good punch and it's light enough to be portable. It also helps me hold down my LCD stand so it doesn't fall over. |

Another option which is very portable if that is a desire. http://www.frontendaudio.com/Yorkville_ ... p/7422.htm or http://www.frontendaudio.com/Yorkville_ ... p/7434.htm comes with a mounting bracket and if you add a couple of "o" clamps (such as used for lighting) you can mount right to your tv stand. I use one and it works great, never had any feedback issues either. |

I recently purchased a powered Gemini GX-801 8" powered monitor from www.djdeals.com for $139 delivered. They also have a 10" and 12" version, but I was looking for something small and light. I found that Gemini is a common entry-level speaker in the UK, and now I am seeing that Guitarcenter and Musicians Friend are beginning to carry them as well. It is crisp and clear, great for a small monitor, and it puts out around 200 watts. As long as you aren't expecting a lot of low end, this performs very well as a karaoke monitor. For the price, I am very pleased with it. It is well put together as well. |

I can remember back in the mid 80s BOSS had a pretty nice personal monitor setup with a single 8". The band My dad was in had two members who owned a music store so they always had the new toys to demo. the drummer and Keyboard player both used them for a while.. Ive looked for one of those a few times on ebay as I don't want to spend the cash on the Mackie. I don't remember the details as I was like 9 at the time, but I did pay attention to these things even then. |

One more vote for RLC's suggestion on the Yorkville ones. Can't go wrong with Yorkville in term of product and sound quality and very reasonable price too. Alternatively, you may want to look at some good active studio monitors (8") that many use and like. There are some threads on this board on this particular subject. |
