Anyone used or had experiance of these 2.5 hard drives if they are any good to use on the road ,I use 2 Western Digital My Book Essential Edition which are quite bulky and has the power adapter to plug in ,these are very small and only need the usb to plug in.
seen some good reviews on some of them but not for the kind of work we tend to use them for.

I like to use the internal drive on my laptop for reliability and ease of setup, but I carry one of these as a backup for a second laptop that I have (with small disk). I couldn't pass it up -- $70.00 for 320G. No big case to carry (fits easily in my laptop case).

You obviously have to be careful how you pack them, a bit. But other than that I can't see why they would be any problem at all. They seem to be fast enough to support use live, and their MTBF is at least as good as the 3.5" externals that people are so unnaccountably fond of using.

From what ive read so far they are a bit more rigid than the 3.5 versions as they ment to be in laptops and the likes ,i only have a 40 gb in my laptop and i do a few discos so need quite a bit of music and karaoke so cant really get by with out externals otherwise i would agree internal is always the best way to go.

I use a Seagate Free Agent 1TB Drive for karaoke and music files. It's only an issue if you have to power them off your battery for any period of time. If you're near a wall socket you're golden, found that out when I was doing some file management on an airplane because it seemed like a good way to spend time. Turns out I only got 1.5 hours of battery life instead of the normal 3.

I'd recommend their use as normal duty items no different than the internal in your laptop.

Thanks for that mckyj57 and Gryf being that they not that badly priced compared to the normal powered external hard drives ,the +'s out way the negs upto now and as for battery i normally get about 3 hours too but would never run a gig on battery anyway but nice that if there was a problem that you could get away with it for a short while.

I have one of the little Western Digital passports. 320 gig and works fantastic.

They come in all sizes and colors...and cheap these days!

By the way Gryf you say a free agent 1TB the only ones i see that run from the USB are the free agent Go and as far as i can tell they go upto 500gb.

I have a Toshiba 320g 2.5" external that works great. No problems whatsoever with 5 times/week karaoke use.

Those USB drive are pretty cheap around here..

What you mean a adapter to conect any drive to the usb?

You can get an external case for a regular internal drive that will connect via USB. I have several of these that I use for different drives that I may need. Alot cheaper than buying a regular external drive of the same size & it can be upgraded easily.

Ok yeah i have a couple like that on my desktop at home ,i thought he ment to turn any into powered by the usb .
i like the idea of smaller externals with less cables.

I have been using Seagate 500g free agent usb powered drives and they have worked flawlessly. I have bought them on sale and they are reasonable @ $99

Apologies, got my sizing mixed up. The Go only come in the 500 GB max capacity. The 1 TB needs a power outlet. Sorry for the confusion.

That was the reason i asked normal reviews for home dont apply.

My sister runs The Karaoke Chicks NJ with a usb powered 320 gig hard drive with no problems, BUT she doesn't use a usb light, & usb sound card like I do. Then add in the dongle from compuhost and you are out of USB ports on most computers.

I have tried the powered usb drives, and my only complaint is they need to be plugged into the main USB port that is direct to the motherboard, The other usb ports on my computer (the ones on the front) will not power it. Alot of the passport drives cannot be plugged into a HUB, which most laptops have internally, and regular PC's with ports on the front.

Just my personal experience I thought I would share with ya'll.
