anyone know of a 1 rack unit power amp with solid state power supply. I am looking for as much power as I can get in a lightweight, and compact unit.

Well I know of some, but none from reputable manufacturers that I'd recommend. The few that I know of that are on the market from from makers like Samson, American Audio and such. None have very much power either, 100W/ch or less in most cases.

Is your concern the size or the weight? If you're looking for a powerful amp in a light package, I would recommend looking at Carvin. Their new L series amps have some pretty impressive specs and come in a 16 lb package. Looking at their site now, I just noticed they do have a 150W/ch 1U amplifier as well. I'd trust Carvin far more than the other brands I've mentioned above.

Problem is most 1U amps are designed for home studio monitoring & aren't very high powered for most PA system use.
Peavey used to have a CS200X 1U amp as well, may be able to find one on e-bay. However even it only pushed 75 watts per channel.

Another 1U amp that I've never used and can't vouch for, but you can probably call Audiopile and trust whatever Liz tells you. 230 watts into 8 ohms stereo. Binding post outputs only, no SpeakOn or 1/4". The vents on the top concern me too, so if you decide you might want this thing, ask them if it's okay to block those things or not. I dont even like rack mounted power amps unless they are in a separate rack. Even then I like 1 empty rack space above them due to heat. Rethink this project again...

karyoker,

I'm with you on this one. I don't like the idea of not having at least a little space between my amps. Just asking for problems down the road IMO. Would like to research the 1unit amps tho. So far I haven't seen anything that really interests me. Not enough power is usually the issue, plus not having Speakon connections is a biggie No-No for me.

A solid state power supply and lot's of power can't fit in a 1U in my opinion :roll: Lot's of power means a bigger power supply, often bigger capacitor and a good power supply would be a toroidal which is not necessary small :wink:

You'll need a 2U amp and I would recommend the new Crown XTI series, they go from 275/475/650/1200w at 8ohms and weights under 18lbs. They're using a front-to-rear airflow fan for cooling, no need to worry about leaving a space between components. Also, they come with a DSP which means you won't be needing to get an active crossover or an EQ, it's all in where it should be, in the input signal :wink:

PS. You can get the XTI 2000 for $525.00 free shipping, brand new not an open boxed, can't beat that :wink:

Thanks for all the input,

WHat I am trying to do is....... I have a karaoke system with powered nx55 yorkvilles, which are fine for the audience. However I am wanting to put an am in the rack for the monitors. I have 1 ru open, and am trying to keep a simple setup.

For 'in your face' monitors 100 watts should be plenty :D

Something like a Fender 1270 would be inexpensive, or you could go real inexpensive with powered monitor(s) like I use, Gemini GX-801 (http://www.djdeals.com/geminiGX801.htm) for $139 each delivered.

That is what I would do if I didnt currently own some real nice peavey floor monitors.

i have a behringer self powered that would work as a floor monitor, but the sound isnt up to par with the yorkville speakers. I have has the peaveys on a peavey 2600, and they sound great. but the 2600 is 50 lbs and 2 rack units......

I have a Samson Servo 120A I use in bridged mode for a monitor speaker. Puts out 120w. I use it with a Kustom KPC10M and it works fine.

If you don't already have an extra EQ for monitors, that makes the Crown XTi pretty attractive.

I used to have three of these at the bottom of a 12U rack with other stuff taking up the rest of the space, and I never had heat problems. The highest the amps ever registered for me was 61C when being driven fairly hard into 2 ohm stereo loads. They don't go into thermal protection until 80C IIRC. I also like the light-weight.

My partner made one freak out one night by putting four 4 ohm cabinets on one side of an XTi 2000 in stereo. Nothing was on the other side. Why he did this amounts to cluelessness, but to my surprise it worked for at least an hour before the amp freaked out and started clipping like crazy. Thankfully nothing was permanently damaged, but the HF drivers in all the speakers over-heated quickly and sounded like crap for hours.
