Hi Guys - Bit of an issue at my Thurs Night show that I'm trying to come up with different ways of handling. I've got a younger crowd that comes in and dominates the rotation (21-26 yr olds, about 2 dozen of them) I think its starting to take its toll on some of the older, regular singers. Part of the problem is I dont really see them ordering a lot - and one particular gentleman, walked in with a soda and bagel from the Dunkin Donuts next door --

Other then dropping hints and asking them if they're buying drinks and what not -- Would giving them a "Song Ticket" with each drink purchase kind of give them a nudge in the right direction? No purchase, no song? I don't see this being a problem for the other regulars as it would kind of go unseen, they're eating/drinking anyway -- Thoughts or other ideas?

Certainly sounds like a good option. I've contemplated this recently as we are now doing an outdoor show that doesn't require anyone to actually go into the bar/restaurant. They have a sign at the entrance to the patio that says it is for "customers" only - but so far we haven't had a problem. That was one of the options, though - in order to sing they'd have to order something and receive a ticket. The other option is signs on the tables that suggest a whatever dollar minimum per person to use the table. (Most places don't allow customers to bring in outside food - is this a bar? If so, bartender should put an end to that.)

We haven't had this problem yet but I can understand that that age group (the entitled ones) may not think they have to - it's their "RIGHT" to sing anywhere they want. (Rant over)

Personally, I think this idea has alot of merit. If you leave it as it was you stand the chance of losing more of the "older" group and if you use your new idea you may lose a few of the younger group who aren't as consistent a paying customer which is the bottom line. I myself being in the older group catagory, who likes a variety of Genre's would not like to consistently listen to predominently 80's or 90's but an even mix witch is desirable but probably not achievable. Maybe you can set up a stagger system, one from the younger group and one from the older unless it's to hard to monitor which may be the case...your the judge! Or designate an hour or two for each Genre so that all can participate. I hope somethig works out for you...Bobbyd

Speak with the owner or management. When we had that problem before we had to hire security and check ID"S at the door. That eliminated a few but they were good singers and good kids. They always ate and contributed. They all acted and looked like they were 21 or over and they were friends with all and very polite.

Tried it and unless you can get the bartender on board it will not work. It will turn you into a heavy when you refuse to take the request of someone who is trying to circumvent the policy.

Sounds like you're dealing with karaoke neophytes. Remind your patrons to enjoy themselves and to please remember to tip your bartenders and wait staff. I am borderline diabetic and can't drink alcohol the way I used to. So I just tell the waitress that I'm the designated driver and to keep the water or diet drinks flowing.

The neophytes don't realize that if the bar dies, so does the karaoke...

Also, if you're a KJ asking for tips (like my friend DJ Cowboy in Wilmington), I'm going to add my money to the pot. Good KJ's are hard to come by. If you make me "the singer" look good, I'm more than happy to pay for your services. Better yet, I may make a new friend in the process. Another benefit to the karaoke experience...
