Any type of advertising for me is left up to the venue owner, unless it is in the venue itself. I'll put up posters.

I avoid contests, so I'm not much help on that specific area.

Get emails from all customers you can & build a Myspace & or Facebook page - Twitter if you can! Find any & all free advertising on the web you can locate through searches - even Craiglist you can do free advertising for up to 7 days I believe & then finally create posters, fliers & table tents on your own! I never rely on bar owner/managers to do any major advertising for the karaoke or karaoke events. I am advertising MY show & events "I" host! I take care of that myself. Sometimes you will get lucky and the owner/manager will do something as well!

Don't get me wrong I don't believe there is anything wrong with advertising. I think Lon's suggestions are very intelligent ones. The important thing is to find ways that it doesn't cost more than you make. Putting fliers in store windows and having the venue get a free banner for the outside of the building from one of his venders are some ideas.

In my area it has always been the responsibilty of the venue to advertise. It's the norm here and not something I'd consider changing.
