Gemini reminded with his krazy post of something I had intended to bring up and had forgotten until now.

In Washington State (and this may apply anywhere in the country) it is very simple to get licensed to perform weddings. Hubby and I have both become "certified" to perform ceremonies and now offer it as part of our DJ/KJ wedding package. It's amazing the number of people who are not in some way connected to a church and prefer to go the route of a 100% multidenominational wedding (including not religious at all). The last one we did music at (didn't do the ceremony) was wonderful. There are tons of books out there to assist in creating a great service. I have found many of them in my Goodwill shopping expeditions.

How many of you have considered doing this? I'd be interested to know if the certification we received is actually available in every state.

Here is a link that purports to have some state-by-state info:

http://marriage.about.com/cs/marriageli ... ciants.htm

I notice that it doesn't go into detail about "ordained and/or licensed clergyman" as defined by Washington.

My fiancee as a joke became a reverend online. It cost him a small fee and all he had to do was sign up over the internet. He received paper work and a card to prove he was a reverend. Come to find out it was totally legit. He registered with the state and was able to perform his sisters wedding ceremony this May. He can do weddings and funerals only.

Karen what a great selling idea. Now all we need to do is to be able to bake a cake and cater and we can do the whole wedding. LMAO

The last wedding we did, I did the photography as well - and I previously decorated wedding cakes for a living, so yes, we could become the whole package. Imagine working one Saturday a month and picking up about $3 grand...that's my goal at this point. Have to have a good Bridezilla detector though.

Sorry off topic -

Have you seen the show "Bridezilla"? If I was those men I'd call off the wedding ! The last 2 shows I saw the woman were spending $30,000 on their weddings not telling their fiancees. Most of these woman are spoiled selfish children. It's so unbelievable to watch. Cake Boss is a good show too. :D

I was ordained through Universal Life Church as well. At my brother's wedding, I was the officient, the best man, and the DJ.

I offer my wedding officient services as part of my portfolio, but i have found that most people already ahve their officient booked by the time they start looking for entertainment. It is like they always say, entertainment is the last thing brides think about, even though it ALWAYS proves to be the most important.....

Oh, and for those of yall that are looking into the quickie ordination, note that the ULC themselves do say that it is only legal in like 38 of 50 states, so make sure you figure out if it is legal in your state before you start charging people to marry them only to find out it wasn't a legal marriage!!

Just what kind of “farm experience” are we talking about, Ollie? I knew a guy up in Leadville, when I tended bar up there claimed everything he knew about the birds and the bees, he learned from his Daddy’s mules. Never knew quite how to take that either. LMAO

All the more reason, I guess, to advertise your officiant services, hook 'em, then offer them the rest of the kit and kaboodle....

Wow, I think I have heard it all now. Karaoke Music and actually performing Wedding, what next. I guess in today's economy, we are going to have the KJ doing the wedding, the music, and the cooking for a GOOD price, right?

Yes, I am a convert for Universal Life Church as well. It wasn't by my choice. My friend approached me out of the blue and said, we are getting married and we want you to perform the ceremony. I went online and got "ordained" and performed the ceremony and it was a lot of fun.

I asked him why he asked me and he said, you do know my brother right? Would you want him to do anything that was important? I said, yep I agree and I was the best choice among his family and friends.

Well, it all turned out well, he is father of two and loves him life so I guess I did good...

Maybe I'll go online and get a Jethro Bodine Brain Surgeon or Double Naught Spy Certificate. Well glad someone's making a ton out of this.

Post subject:  Re: Weddings and Karaoke

who said anything about making a TON? LOL. We got married on the 1st of February and my BBF got "ordained" to marry us - it was wonderful since we don't belong to a church. I figured if she can do it, why not us? We are both "ordained" similarly - when I was looking, people who had done the same were charging $150! Seems a little crazy. I'm not sure what I would charge frankly....depends who it is.

Post subject:  Re: Weddings and Karaoke

I would charge them an arm AND a leg, maybe even their first born ...heheh.. Holy cow! this brings back memories! I once did a ceremony for this guy I didnt even like. Couldn't stand his wife either, but they considered me their "best" friend,,,yuckkkkkkkkkkk. It was nothing official, just renewing their vows at our "then" local karaoke hot spot. The bar didn't want to do it, but relented anyway. I do actually have to say it turned out very nice. If I actually were to do something like again for real, I would probably charge a separate fee from my normal music fee. Probably somewhere in the neighborhood of around 100-150. But them again, i'm a greedy soul! haha

In California at least, you can get a limited type of permit (good for just a few days) that allows you to perform a wedding. A friend's dad was able to officiate her wedding via that route. I'm sure it's more expensive than just joining the ULC but would be an option for those who don't want to join. (I see that it's mentioned in Mickyjs link as "Deputy for a Day.")
