While I was drinking heavily the other night I had an idea for a kiosk application that would work with just about anyone's hosting software. That is to say that the names and songs would just be entered into rotation automatically without the KJ having to type anything.

Would anyone need or use such an app.?

Only exists for one hosting software that was recently pulled off the open market which was autokdj. There was another that weed wrote as well. Both only worked with it's respective software. I believe the one you are referring to needs human intervention to get it into the que. I personally am not interested in such a software until my hosting software makes a certain change in how it drops the new singers into the que. Otherwise it would mean an unfair rotation.

Say Weed.... I guess I don't understand the "universal" part of your idea... Obviously I can't speak for your software, but I can tell you that mine will work with any well-formed *.csv file including one made from data from a disc collection. Or even just DJ songs....

Yeah, I guess I didn't explain that very well. What I meant by "Universal" is that it would work with MTU, Compuhost, S&D's (yuck), etc. without changing the hosting software function, the new singer/song information would just be entered by the kiosk app. into the hoster.

I also had another sick and twisted idea about making a MP3/CDG file naming program that gets the file name from the CDG title screen, but that one will take a lot more fiddling.

Been there..... couldn't find a reliable Windows handle (for the input control) that didn't crash the hosting app. in the process. Maybe you can do what I couldn't make reliably...

They seem to pretty jealously guard their stuff. I have some tools for MTU songlists and KMA files which could be nice for some people to have. But when I asked for some info about file formats, they clammed up big time. Just not interested in opening that stuff up.

There are *so* many command line tools you can make to automate stuff, but they don't want to give you the info you need. For instance, I have it set up so you can make changes in a spreadsheet and run a program, and it will mass-rename all the data in the KMA file. There are lots of things that could be done, but they want to sell their toolsets (which are extremely limited).

The realization that MTU was not going to give me diddly, and that they had no intention of allowing anything like a mass import from a file tree, made me switch to (and start recommending here) CompuHost. Now I can change my file tree (perhaps re-ripping at a higher rate) and import all in one swell foop.

Thanks for the tip. Which hosters did you try it with? I'm not seeing a bunch of folks saying how much they need it which is what I wanted to know in the first place. There's no point in building it if they won't come.

Got a buddy that always pushed AutoKDJ. When did it get pulled, and how come?

Toqer took Autokdj support and development onto IRC because of his frustration at seeing AutoKDJ being used with pirate content. See here.

Apparantly the creator got word that the product was possibly being used for pirate shows & pulled it for general purpose. I believe he stated that he will still give the links for free once he talks & gets to know you a bit - I believe it was Toqer, one of our users that designed the program.

It is, and it was a mutual friend, Jokerswild, that I was referring to.

Unfortunately, after many great conversations on another forum, Toqer ( who has a strong serious streak) took issue with some of the things we disagreed on, and now I get most info through Jokerswild. A shame, because he's a guy that we can learn a lot from in regard to PC use.

Good for the AutoKDJ guy! Nothing like a person with integrity.

What I found striking though was what he displayed on that web page: A Kiosk....

From the site:
Quote:
Oh my, what is this? What is this little touch screen behind the bar at the 7 Bamboo? I'll tell you what it is. It's the end. The end of paper (@$%&#!) scribble scan type your drunk name in everytime BS. It's the end of unfair rotations, drama, bullsh1t, favoritism, douchebaggery and a$$holism that's plauged karaoke forever.
It's also the begining of even greater things. It's transforming karaoke from a crapola add on to bring in more drinkers to a fixed centerpeice of its evolution. It's streamline the hell outta the whole shabang, and right now the 7 Bamboo is the only venue in the world running it.

Although he may not be aware of it because he states it's the "only one in the world" but Exweedfarmer and I have been using kiosks for years.... and I've been using touchscreen kiosks for well over 2 years....

So he's not really "the first" but you gotta hand it to him for his integrity.

But...You have got to give Toqer credit. He did not write autOKdj but he is the driving force behind it. This is a guy who gets things done. His original idea was to give away the hoster and strike a deal with the manus for a cut of the download profits. I know because he contacted me about joining the development team. Not a bad idea but I didn't think it would fly. Anyway, autOKdj was a joke at first but it quickly became a very respectable product. My hat is off to him even though he did cost me money and use my kiosk idea... guano occures.
