Figured I'd share this. I drive by our local Pizza Hut and they have a billboard advertising "KARAOKE WEDNESDAY NIGHT 5-9". I thought hmmm, this could be pretty cool, or it could be really lame. I decided to check it out. We walked in, and what do we see but a Pizza Hut employee with a PlayStation 2 hooked up to one of the small, wallmounted TVs in the corner. KARAOKE REVOLUTION for God's sake! Sounded awful, and to top it off, they bring in a GAME that judges the singer's ability to perform. If you do bad enough, it fails you. To me, this was a joke and a sorry attempt to bring in customers. They told us if one of us gets up to sing, we'd get 10% off our bill. If the both of us sing, it's 15% off. So I said what the heck, if it gets me a discount. My girl and I bombed "Love Shack" which I'll add we normally rock at a real show. I don't know who I was more embarrassed for, me or the "hostess". I just thought you all would get a laugh from this.

I'd do it for 15% off my bill. It's sad when the place has to pay people to sing.

Heck for 15% off, I might even sing country. Everybody knows you can have successful karaoke with any system and any host. NOT
If it sounds that bad it will drive people away, not bring them in.

absolutely... their pizza is about the worst in the country!
I don't like their pasta stuff either.
And when places like that treat Karaoke like THAT, what do you expect?

You don't like Pizza Hut? That deep dish crust is money! They always seem to cost the most money, too.

Reminds me that a local Pizza Hut used to have a pretty well run Open Mic night. If they are open to that sort of thing, I'd better head down with flyers.
I think this whole thing of having an employee run a cheap karaoke set up has just sunk to yet a new level. Wish we could get a chance at showing some of these places something different but I'm not sure some of them even really know what real karaoke is anymore.
I "sang" for a free beer once at a new show. I liked the idea of it but the host was snooty and we didn't go back, though.

It worked on you, and maybe even some of the other karaoke host in your area.(Ok, Ok, it would have worked on me too)
I'm sure this promotion is geared toward parents with little kids who could care less about the quality of the rig or KJ. The pizza hut management is just doing this the cheapest way possible in their eyes and probably can't see the value of a hiring a professional. I will give them credit for being creative, and if it works, GREAT for PH. Ya never know, The PH customer maybe become one of your singers someday.
Jay,look at it this way. It just makes your show look all the better.
Maybe the karaoke is just a diversion so you won't notice how crappy the pizza is.

Do they have to pay ASCAP/BMI or are video games somehow exempt from that?

The music is still music and would not be exempt. But I guarantee something like that didn't even cross the managers mind so am willing to bet they aren't paying a cent.

Umm, not to be too picky (the foodie side of me comes out now), Pizza is not Italian invention but rather an Italian American invention. The Italians have Focaccia, which is same type of bread but with very little topping on it, if at all. The Pizza as we know it with tomato sauce, cheese, meat and veggies on top is definitely an American creation.
So, I believe the thin style pizza is more New York style and the deep dish is more Chicago style.

Most of the Pizza Huts near me have been converted to delivery only places, though I think there may be on in Renton still that has in house service. Hmmm....I wonder if they have karaoke? I may have to join this revolution!! maybe sing a little Dean Martin!

All the dining capable Pizza Huts around here are also now carryout/delivery only as well. I know of none anymore that have dine in.
