Post subject:  Video editing question

First of all, please don't laugh:)

I shot some video last weekend and they were intended for going online. It was a stage setting, so part of the time I wanted the full stage view, and part of the time I turned the cam sideways to cut out some of the side areas. (yeah, needed to zoom in a bit more than the zoom feature allowed)

It was on a digital camera with video... I'm used to taking photos that way, because they are easy to just flip sideways after loaded on my pc.

But I can't do that with the videos... so now I have 4 sideways videos that look really retarded.

I don't have a video editing tool that will fix that problem. I edit most of my photos online with piknik... does anyone know of an online video editing program that you can actually rotate the video... or am I just screwed?

It all depends on whether you are using the PC still or converted to the Mac. If you are still using a PC, there are two ways to go, inexpensive or expensive. As for expensive, many of the movie editing software will let you rotate the video, such as ACDSee Pro and others.

The cheap way are either using a plug in or built in. I hear that Windows Movie Maker does it, check out this link. Or you can get a plug in for QuickTime movie like this one

For the Mac side, I am pretty sure that the iMovie will rotate the video and it's free.

Either way, you will get a wide band on either side of the video because of the format change when you rotate. There isn't much you can do about that.

Just do a Google search on rotate video and you will get a ton of suggestions. Good luck.

Oh, I did a google search.... seems everything I found wanted me to download a free trial. I don't want to download anything, I was hoping to find a place where you can just use the online site to do it.

Nope, no Mac yet. Offtopic: (but totally ok since it's my thread) I did download a trial version of Mixcraft, which is window's closest version to garageband... and it's making me want a Mac even more, I've had tons of fun with this.

Lets see, expensive or inexpensive? Tough question. :D I'll opt for the inexpensive, because surely this is a mistake I WONT be making again. I do have a cd of Vegas Studio, I have it on my desktop which is not with me at the moment... so I guess I could try loading that on my laptop. But I don't recall it having that feature. (who takes sideways videos anyhow?)

A friend played/sang at a local festival and I volunteered to get the pics and last minute thought "hey, I can grab a bit of video too while I'm at it"... and I messed that up:)

I'll check out the link, a band on the side is preferable to a sideways video.. thanks Ben.

Charmin - Eben's suggestion of using Window's Movie Maker program works just fine for rotating. I just did a test experiment. You'll just have to convert the video files that your phone made into a format that Movie Maker can use. What format are the phone's videos in right now?

Done!!

Ben, you're awesome. (either that, or I'm just an eejit, Lol)

All four are now rotated. You know, I was JUST using WMM the other day to darken up some video I had taken of my kids... the video had way too much white in it... but I hadn't even noticed the "rotate video" option on there. Dang, maybe if my memory wasn't so sketchy I could have figured it out.

Odie, sending you a PM. Wasn't my phone, was the digital camera. (actually, was my mom's digital camera, my cam card was full..go figure)

Well that's good that you got that fixed. I'd like to see some of that M'Lee video.
Yep, Ben is a genius alright! :)

She did really good... there's a total of 9 videos, but only 4 were *sideways*. (the ones where she was solo)

Check out her myspace, she posted pics from there, and I think she's going to post the videos too... you can find her from either of my myspace sites.

Hey, btw, what was it Phil said we were supposed to do to mark a help topic as "answered" or something like that? I recall he said something about it a little while back.

EDIT... Note to self: Look before asking.

Found it:)

Wow.. Good news..

I have some videos that need to be turned sideways to obscure faces.

JD.....

Some videos... the people filmed are sideways on purpose, and it would blow the whole idea if they were rotated:)

If you have any questions on some of yours, send them over and I'll check it out and give you advice/opinions, ok?

Just an offer.

:D
