Any suggestions about where to get a couple of good discs or downloads of dance music, party music and a few maybe 20 shag songs for down time/breaks during karaoke.

Check out the "NOW" series of CDs for good, current dance music.

What I do, however, is just go to the Billboard Web site then to Amazon.com's MP3 site and preview then download the good dance songs from the top 40 each month. I probably spend about $6-10 a month and always have the best dance music!! Don't forget to include the old school classics in your dance sets as well!!

I would second the Billboard approach. Once a month I do this as well - even though I never offer "dance sets" unless I'm DJ'ing. However, having several options, depending on the show, of music that is recognizable by the crowd is a good thing. Never know when you might have to spend a few minutes organizing or reorganizing a song or two -- no dead air.

Here is another good resource I use for my wedding DJ setlists. This is a list of the top 200 requested DJ songs over the past 12 months as recorded by a network of thousands over DJs. They seem to update this list about once every 3 months. If you downloaded the upbeat songs off this listing, you would have a good DJ setlist for your typical "adult" bar that people of all ages would recognize.

The only thing about this listing is it does take a while for current songs to make the listing, so this is jsut a good base that should be supplemented with current Billboard hits:

Feel free to use my music search engine for most requested. The top 200 is the same as Tohers' link but this breaks down by decade also.

This is the index page with a search of my libraries. I need to update as per the methods above.. Use the different search filters.

I will be doing a birthday party for a sixteen year old. This used to give me trepidations like crazy then i found a good method. While setting up I would put a couple of kids on the computer to search and and make a play list. Also take requests for dance music during the party. . If WIFI is available I download what I dont have.

Then I track these requests and consider getting them for karaoke. One request for karaoke from this new DJ list is a definite karaoke song to get. BTW I never listen to the radio and first time when I hear something is at karaoke. All of the new songs I sing after awhile I have to get the artists original to see what it originally sounded like. LOL

This search engine is DJ Intelligence which runs about $100/year. It also has instant online quotes and other party planning tools. For those that do parties it is a good tool.

I've save these two bookmarks. Good stuff.

I too use DJIntelligence and when I have a private party, I encourage those that I am working for to use my site to pick their songs.

Another way is to check into iTunes' music store & look at the top 100 downloads list. From there you can preview the tracks to see if they'd be right for your show. I think they update it at least daily if not more often.

Interesting. For a karaoke show I usually save certain songs for performance... for example: "Pour some sugar on me" should be sung, not played. Especially if you've got singers with the chops to pull certain songs off. A cute chick singing "Pour" can be great, or a guy if he can sing it.

Even "Boom Boom Pow" can be done karaoke as well as "Strokin'".

Some standard dance tunes usually NOT done karaoke are:

"Cupid Shuffle"
"Cha cha slide"

These songs could go either way:

"Low", or "Yeah",
"Hot in Herre"
"My Humps"
"'right round"
"Brick House"
"Play the Funky Music"
"Poker Face"

"Hot in Herre"
"My Humps"
"'Right round"
"Brick House"
"Play the Funky Music"
"Poker Face"
"Strokin"
"Pour Some Sugar"

All these songs are sung at my venue, but I've never had someone attempt Boom Boom Pow yet. That I'd like to see.
