Hi everyone,

This is my first time venturing into the world of karaoke. I have not owned any karaoke equipment before. So please be kind and patience.

1) I would like to buy a cheap system that can play DVD karaoke discs. I'm not interested in the lap-top route with complicated software, mixer and PA system. I just want a CHEAP and reliable karaoke machine (with the woofers and amp built-in) that I can just hook up to the TV to see the pictures and words (from the DVD karaoke discs) to sing along to.

2) I can't sing worth a damn from just looking at the words. I need to hear the artist's vocal in order to sing along, but I only want the listeners to hear my vocal and NOT the artist's vocal. So I need a DVD karaoke system that allows me to hear the artist's vocal in my ears ONLY through a headphone (while without the headphone, you can only hear my singing + the music, not the artist's vocal). Does this function exist?

The more recommendations the better. Many thanks in advance!!!

I'm assuming this is just for home use. There are several units out there that will give you feature number one but there isn't any that will give you feature number two.

Karaoke dot com has one rsq unit that might fit the bill.

I'm surprised that feature #2 is not available anywhere. Considering how much easier it is to sing along than to solo, even some professional singers have earphones to hear the pre-recorded vocal as they sing along and perform live. I'm surprised that no manufacturer offers this option. Such common sense, since most of us are not great singers and can't carry a tune by ourselves.

Those earphones you see are called "in-ear monitors" and are used so the singer can hear their OWN voice over the band. What the audience hears is rarely what the people performing hear on stage.

I'm a firm believer that 99% of people can learn to sing competently. First, they have to learn to listen so they can hear relative pitches in a melody, then learn to use their voice to reproduce those pitches. You're taking the first steps, and I bet you're getting better all the time. Try a few songs without the guide vocals.

Is that so? I didn't know that. I've always thought that they're listening to a recording of their record and sing along as they perform live. lol...

Anyway, I have experiences singing solo and singing along with a headphone listening to a duplicate cd of the artist, and the latter was 100 times better.

It seems like a good feature to have. It's a great way to build confidence, especially for shy people, and a great tool to quickly learn and to get more familiar with a song.
