As most know, SC used MediaCloq protection on some of their 8700 series discs a while back. I recently got a couple of these from an ebay auction. I had preiously managed to rip the copy a MediaCloq disc using an HP 7500i (updated to 8100i firmware), so I dusted of the drive and connected it. If got very hot and smelled of burning and it died! I shed a tear for my first ever CD writer! We have a Goodwill Computer Works here in Austin and I was able to pick up a Sony CRX160 (the HP was a rebranded Sony CRX100). I was able to rip the disc to an image using CloneCD (set to rip first session only, no data and to read subchannel data from audio). I mounted the image with Virtual Clone Drive and then ripped it using Power CDG Burner.

About half the tracks worked flawlessly, the other half had CDG errors at the very beginning leaving the screen devoid of lyrics or indeed anything. I used CDGfix (free version) to find the location of the color settings in a good CDG file, then copied and overwrote those bytes in the bad files using a Hex editor.

On the bad tracks a little bit of the splash screen was garbled but the lyrics were fine.

I know I could have found an alternate source for the rips but that would have required using a file sharing forum of one kind or another, meaning that I would also be uploading as I was downloading and I'm not going there!

Either way, check out your Goodwill / similar for one of these 9 year old CD burners, $8 allowed me to rip these discs. Hopefully you won't need to edit the CDG files, it only happened on one disc, the other was fine!

Needless to say these instructions are for educational purposes only, you are not reverse engineering anything to defeat copy protection. (Although CloneCD is distributed from a 'friendly' country!) You may only follow these instructions to make backups or format shifting for home use only (fair use and all that).
