Hard for me to answer accurately - two new dudes appeared on the scene recently announcing a HUGE number of songs. As I haven't actually been to their shows (I don't even know if they actually have shows yet...they are trolling) I'd be hard pressed to say....although someone who has NEVER been in the biz would have to have spent a small fortune to acquire 20,000 songs overnight. ??

I guess from those that are working their is a 50/ 50 split in my area. . . 50% are pirates their is about 20% that I would (making an educated guess ) assume are and probably about 12 shows that offer a pirated system but have no work.

So it's probably 75% illegal.

I can confirm that 5 shows out of about 45 are certainly without a doubt legal, and 2 shows that use a one for one copy.

edit: to clarify I voted 50/50

This same person has a crew that does karaoke at different clubs on the same nights. I guess multi hard drives. Oh well, what are we legal people gonna do?

Don't know about the surrounding larger cities but in our small out of the way area 2 of the 5 companies are legal.

Don't have a clue...too busy with my own to go to anyone else's. Besides, there aren't many karaoke shows around me, and most of the businesses on my island looking for karaoke are asking me to do it. I'm working every night except for Monday, and could be running two shows on some nights if I could afford a second library that's decent. But I can't do that and keep up with my own.

Same here - I don't have a clue. I don't go to other people's shows because I'm busy with my own. The few KJs that I know personally are legal, but that is a small representation of all of them in my area.

I voted 75%, but it is probably closer to 85%. Even most of the disc based systems have copies of discs from their friends' systems. Some of the old timers were swapping copies long before anybody here was computerized.

I am aware of two hosts that got their start up by copying the discs from the systems of hosts' they were working for. One of them went so far as to photocopy the pages out of the other host's book using Post-its to block out the host's name.

75% is pretty close in my area if you factor all format types. Were at 99% if you only consider computer based. We have one guy here supporting 2-3 shows a night all comp based AND he's selling hard drives to smaller KJ's. I think he aspires to be dan stern. His shows are all run by tone deaf statues that have had the nerve to try and undercut us solely in the basis of # of songs. Their 50K+ to our 14K. our venue owners already know the deal and send thme packing. He even gets over on the locals that buy from him by selling a maintenance contract on updates and software support (running Hoster). Of which they've told me they don't get.

Define pirate.

Is a KJ who uses download sites of questionable legality like buykaraokedownloads and karaokesingles a pirate?

Is a KJ who burns singers' CDGs and stores them in folders separate from their own so those singers don't have to keep bringing their discs in a pirate?

What if the KJ can't resist, and will grab a version out of those folders that's better than what he has "just this once" for that special singer. Is he now a pirate?

What if a singer brings in a CD full of zip files that you are almost certain came from a torrent site. And you let them sing to those files. Is that KJ a pirate?

Is the only way to avoid being a pirate involve having a CDG legitimately purchased of everything on your computer? Is your definition of a pirate all of us who don't follow that criterion?

I think it's wrong to include the legal download purchasers, unless they're doing it just to get their songs, and they don't care if they're legal...

To me a pirate is someone that doesn't pay for their library!

I'd say there are many questionable karaoke shows in my area... there's also a lot of people slowly going to computer and mostly still disc based. The conversion to computers is taking longer for the ol' midwesterners!

My definition of a pirate is one who "steals" their music library in order to have a competitive edge over those who buy their music. The little thing here or there would be minor issues to work out. What I am referring to are people who can start up cheaply by buying an illegal pre-loaded hard drive or copy another KJs hard drive for a fee that is a fraction of what they would have paid if they had bought their music. Or they are able to provide tens of thousands of songs by belonging to a file sharing site. Or they make several copies of one set of CD&Gs to run several shows. Chances are some of these pirates wouldn't even be around to be competition if they hadn't gotten away with not making the investment required for a legal library.

I haven't been here in a long while, but decided to drop by for grins...

I heard from a frequent singer/KJ I know that SoundChoice has busted several venues here in Phoenix.

Thanks Uncle, but we've already had a long thread on that subject, even one of the kj's in question from Phoenix area has stopped by and educated us as to what is going on.
