Hey,
my name's Vick, I've been hosting for a few years now but need a little advice.
The company I work for is pullin roots and movin to a different state, and rather than get with another company I was thinkin of startin up my own shindig.
Problem is I'm starting from complete scratch... :(
What would all you seasoned vets out there recommend to me to get my catalogue started and worth while? I've got a bit of money saved up and I'm definetly willing to use it to get a good foundation set up. I've also got all my own equipment, just no karaoke to use with it.
Thanks in advance!

there's a couple of trains of thought that come immediately to mind.

1.) quantity

2.) quality.

Personally, I'd definately get the SC Foundation or one of the other core sets, strictly a matter of taste. Some like the DK Millenium, some like the CB Essentials, but I personally felt the SC Foundation sets were suburb.

THEN get some of the bulk sets, such as the radio starz, all hits, dangerous, best of year discs, and the monthly discs... you can get some pretty good deals out there now. Ebay and the disc buying specials at the various retailers can be your best bud. If you have a site that has user reviews, such as karaoke.com, I'd highly recommend that.

I use karaokeexpress.com for purchasing a lot of my cd's. They usually have really great prices, and sometimes you can find great discs in the 2.99 bargain bin. They have lots of sales. I don't usually like DKK. Especially, the old DKK. Quite often you can hear the "midi melody" playing throughout the song, and it really annoys me. I would probably go with the SC foundations or Chartbuster Essential packs that Matt spoke of. They will give you a lot of popular karaoke songs to begin with. You will need more than these for a good collection, but they are a good start. Also, the Party Tyme disks they sell at Wal-Mart will be packed with popular hits, and I like these also. Often, my Party Tyme version is my favorite version. (I don't really like their All Star line that well.)

I must agree... the Sound Choice Foundations and Bricks are DEFINATELY a good start, you can usually find them new on eBay for $275 - $350 each.

A good filler set is the Sweet Georgia Brown 68 disc pack... honestly I prefer a few of the SGB versions over the SC's but it is mostly the other way around.

As for equipment... primarily digital, or disc based? This will determine the kind of set-up you build.

If you plan on doing both kj & dj you may want to go the rout of a dual deck unit with a control head. The unit has the identical feel to that of a dj's rack mount dual cd deck but with the karaoke capability.

If going Digital, any computer will work, but you need to find software you can function with... HOWEVER rather than the stock sound card, you may want to go with one from a company called Native Instruments. From what I've seen so far, these little buggers can DEFINATELY hold their own.

This is, after all, just my opinion. I know you will hear others... just weigh All your options before passing out the cash, and do what's rite for you!

Don't forget to check out Ebay or Craigslist for KJs going out of business sales. You sometimes can find great deals on whole libraries of CDGs.

I think Missbipbip meant ExpressKaraoke.com... I use the site quite a bit myself.

They have "Deals Under $5" and "Deals Under $10" catagories quickly accessable from their home page. You can often find Sound Choice closeout discs in these catagories as well.
