Hey guys! I'm doing a show for my granddaughter's birthday party Friday night (10 yr old screaming girls all night, ugh) and my daughter came up with the (not so) brilliant idea of recording each of them so they can take home a disc of their singing as a souvenir for the evening. I'm planning on downloading Audacity and using it and I know several of you use it to record your shows. Any suggestions and helpful hints you can pass on would be greatly appreciated |

My experience with Audacity and live shows has been that what you hear is what you get. Just press record for the recording and then save the file. Do it again for the next singer and save a new file. Just make sure that the sounds are not too loud so that it over modulates when recording. |

I use Audacity as well, but as said it's a what you hear is what you get most times. If you want a good quality recording, sometimes it may be a slight sacrifice on your live sound.....! |

Thanks Lonnie & Kevin. As I stated it's for my granddaughter's 10th birthday party so I won't be too awfully concerned if the sound quality is a bit lacking as it's only for their personal use. I reckon I just needed to know if there was anything special I should do as far as levels go or change a sound card setting? Lonnie I know you've posted several live recordings in the showcase and the sound is pretty dayum good. |

You just want to make sure your input level to your computer is not too loud. Just hook it up and record a little and play it back to set your levels. It really is quite easy. There are no special techniques to doing this. |

If you're going to use audacity, setting the levels is a pretty easy thing to do. Use the meters and set the input level so that even the loudest possible signal doesn't push the meters to peak. The digital world is much less forgiving than the analog world when it comes to clipping. The minute you hit that peak indicator, you've got clipping so keep your highest peaks to around -3 to -6d dB. |
