The manager of a local upscale Irish pub contacted me about doing a karaoke night. Has anybody had any experience with this type venue? What Irish standards to get? Do people really sing this type music? ect? ect? Mojo |

I don't know if it's available anymore, but All Hits 1701 has most of the commonly sung Irish songs. That one along with songs found in DK 1-99 or SC Foundation 1 will usually get you by. Oh yeah, play some songs recorded by The Wolfe Tones. That should make the natives restless. |

I've seen all the "Irish Music Greatest Hits" CDG's but what about artists like U2, Van Morrison, Boomtown Rats, ect. I just want be left out of the loop on any standard tunes expected in this type establishment. Mojo |

Any idea about the average age of the customers? We have several Irish bars around here and the part of town usually dictates the age of the clientele. The one I've played before has folks in their 40's on up. The corned beef is wonderful. There's another one in the downtown area that has a lot of college-aged folks and they would probably want the Top-40 songs and less Irish tunes. I'd take all of my stuff and have the Irish disc on hand, just in case. |

Sound Choice has several disks that fit the bill. I use them every St Patty's Day... I highly recommend. |

If you can find it now, grab Top Tunes Disc TU-104. It's my official St. Patrick's Day disc, with around 24 Irish standards. More current offerings will be found on www.kjpro.com |

Is it actually an "All Irish Format" the owner is looking for? Having frequented many Irish taverns in my younger day as I was going through my folk phase in the seventies, the music of the time was by artists such as Tommy Makem and/or The Clancy Brothers. This was played (live) in these places. But try as I may, I can’t seem to find much of that in karaoke format. I have recently visited a couple of such establishments here in AZ. It seems the music is some of the old school as I just mentioned, but it is also recent music from young Irish artists and bands. I listened to a number of tunes I hadn’t heard before, but I understood from the introductions that the source was Irish. I would first ask the owner (if you haven’t already) exactly what he/she’s looking for. I’ll bet it’s not 100% St. Patrick’s Day Toa-Ra-loo-Ra-Loo-Ra type music. While it would be good to have the standards, I’ll bet they’ll be happy to sing from what your library has to offer. After a while you’ll learn what else the clients would like. I would also suggest that you contact some of our international members here from that part of the world. Check out Irish gift store in your area if you have any. You might even have to order such music from Ireland. Below are a couple of reference sites to some of the old school Irish I was speaking of. Not karaoke, but they may at least provide titles and artists to look for in karaoke format. www.IrishCountryMusic.Com www.makem.com |
