I got an email from my brother-in-law and he's having a bad problem with his internet access. He is on Comcast. Firefox will not load. Firefox shows up for about one second in the task manager then disappears. Launching Internet Explorer will load it's home page for about five seconds then IE shuts down. In the control panel he can't even open the Internet Options. He does have email access and can update various programs so his computer seems to have a connection to the Comcast server. Does anybody out there have any possible explanations and solutions? They'd be appreciated! |

That sounds like a resource problem. Have him do a disc cleanup defrag etc. Other than that I need more info such as OS, system info and computer specs. |

Well, if it were I having these problems I would first uninstall the browser and any plug-ins for it and then backup the Registry and then edit the Registry (not an option if you don't know what you're doing or are faint of heart) and delete all the settings in it that relate to the browser itself or any of the related plug-ins and then do a clean install and see what that does for me. Beyond that it is hard to second-guess without seeing the problem first hand. WARNING: Just be careful with the Registry. I've been editing my Registry settings since day one. Since Win 3.10 first came out so it is like second nature for me but inexperienced users can really cause serious problems with their system if they don't have any idea what they're doing. If one is not sure then leave it alone. |

it could be a firewall issue on his computer. Is he running a new or updated AntiVirus program that possibly has a firewall and is blocking the software from loading? |

Now can we discuss my browser problem? |

For a change a fairly simple solution actually worked! It hardly ever does -- seems like it's usually something more involved. Anyway, he couldn't get on the internet to download anything new himself but we finally got a hold of new Firefox and IE8 installation files plus a copy of CCleaner. We removed his old Firefox and IE8, cleaned up some files with CCleaner and reinstalled the browsers. That managed to overwrite what may have been some corrupted internet options settings. Charmin's "blah, blah, blah... blah, blah, blah" idea seemed too extreme so we skipped that one. Feel free to discuss Ollie's browser problem or his trouser problem if he's having one of those too! ha,ha Thanks again for the advice everybody! |

Well, if you ever need to perform the :blah, blah, blah: it's probably best for me to just come over and do it for ya. (it's... complicated) |

It's probably too late but I can suggest one more thing to try before changing anything on your computer, reset the router. If you are receiving the internet connection directly to your PC, then it doesn't work. I have had where the router went to never never land for HTTP service only. The email, which doesn't use HTTP worked but none of the web site would load. Just turn off your computer, power down the router, wait about 20 secs, connect the router, wait another few minutes and turn on the computer. Often that will fix the problem. |

Thanks for the advice Ben. We solved the problem but that's good info to know for when a router is involved! I didn't realize a router could lose it's HTTP connection only.
