unfortunately I have acid reflux. I had the nissan fundiplication done about 7 years ago. It worked well for awhile but slowly but surely it is coming back. I love singing, especially emotional music but I am losing the battle with the acid versus my vocal chords. Anyone have any tips on handling AR and singing. I have gone back to using prevacid and rantidine but the result is limited. Thanks. |

The VA put me on Omeprazole. I took it for a couple of years and the AR went away. I just one every now and then. |

I do the same thing. I take Prilosec (same thing as Omeprazole), and it works well for me when I take it properly. Acid reflux is so aggravating. |

Amazing how many singers have acid reflux and continue to try to treat a throat issue. Now I always ask people, if they question me about having a sore throat for a long time, if they have GI problems. A lot of them have started to take an antacid and it goes away. |

I dealt with that a couple years ago also. I had been slowly, over a few months time, losing my range and getting a smoker's rasp (and I don't smoke at all) ...... I was also getting up at night vomiting, and losing a lot of weight. Needless to say, I thought sure as anything I had some kind of throat cancer. I was surprised when the doc said it was acid reflux, making me sick at night, and burning my vocal chords. Dammed acid does it's nastiest work while you're sleeping. I did Prevacid for a few months and it went away, now when it acts up I just take it a week or so and I'm good. Stay the HECK away from orange juice. I'm a huge OJ drinker (rather, i was) and it was a while before I figured out it was a huge trigger. As was coffee and alcohol. I've given up the OJ and alcohol, now if I could just kick this dang coffee habit, I really don't think I'd ever get it back. It seems to be when I have a cup every day for a couple weeks that the AR will creep back in. While it's bad, it helps a ton if you sleep with your head and chest on an incline. I literally had about 6 pillows propping me up.... or slept in a recliner chair. And a cup of milk & piece of toast a couple hours or so before bedtime seemed to help me too. *No major greasy or spicy stuff (taco meat and spaghetti sauces are a thing of the past, can no longer eat hot salsa at all) *Not lots of coffee *No OJ *Limit the alcohol *Quit nicotine if you use it (any form) *If you get stressed easy, learn to pick up a baseball bat and get your anger out instead of letting it boil inside you and keep you stressed out (seriously, I was going through a rough time, and every argument I had, I'd literally end up vomiting by the end, it was pathetic) Rather than take your med in the morning, take it a few hours before bed, but on an empty stomach. (seems to help better at night that way, when it's worse) Ok, doc Charmin out:) Good luck, that stuff is awful, if it gets bad enough. . |

Don't eat after 5-6. I have used stuff called Aciphex? Worked well to stop a pain that felt like a big butcher knife being twisted in my chest. After 2 pills the pain was gone for good. I thought i was having a heart attack once. After 3 days in the hospital they said acid reflux. Very strange health condition. I also sleep on my left side or back. If i sleep on my right side some times depending upon how long after i eat, stuff comes up. Yuk... |

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I have been dealing with it for years and I've been thru most everything the dr's could tell me. I had the wire down my throat thru my nose overnight and the counted the # of times the acid came uo in my throat, it was like 1600 times in 10 hours prior to the nissan procedure. I drink too many liquids before bed (water mostly) and of course I drink beer which is a known trigger. I don't think I'll ever give up the beer, but who knows. I was hoping someone would have something non-traditional that they found on their own that would help. I am using prilosec and zantac now but I need to reduce the size of the portions i eat and make a lifestyle change if I am really going to beat it. Thanks again everone. |

Acid Reflux can really damage your vocal chords. A really great way to solve digestive problems like acid reflux is to treat the problem with a natural remedies. Aloe Vera Juice can be purchased at the natural food store in a drink form and is usually sold by the quart or gallon. Be sure to store it in your refrigerator as it makes it taste better (not bad warm but tastes better cold). Not only will it soothe the digestive system but will also assist the body in healing itself. Believe it or not it only takes an ounce or two once a day to do the trick. Be careful to not over do it with the dosages to begin with as Aloe can solve any internal plumbing issues if you have problems in that area, and you will be a frequent visitor to the restroom facilities so just ease into it and increase slowly until you find a happy balance. Also Digestive Enzymes assist the body in restoring balance to the digestive system. After a certain age your stomach can slow down the amount of digestive enzymes it produces naturally. By supplementing with this mixture you will restore the stomach's ability to digest your food and assimilate it. Excess acids will be reduced and will restore balance to your system. These two remedies totally eliminated my acid reflux problems. Within about 2 -3 weeks. Results were immediate but I continued to take them for about 90 days to allow my body to heal. Now if I have any indigestion issues I take a shotglass of Aloe Juice and within minutes the symptoms are gone. Hope this helps! |

Now there's some new info I have never heard. I don't think it should be too expensive to give it a try. Thanks. |

First, I don't recommend Prilosec or Nexium. They work, but are actually too strong. The acid in your stomach is also a natural defense against disease, and these drugs neutralize way too much, lowering your defenses. I used to have reflux almost every night, waking up with it. Just take a Zantac 75, or if need be, a 150 ( but break it in half first for quicker results). If you wish, drink a tsp of baking soda mixed with water for instant help, and the zantac will work afterward for many hours. |

I had GERDS for 15 years, and about 12 years ago it irritated my vocal chords so badly that I had to have a nodule removed (with great success). About 9 years ago I had surgery to permanently repair the GERDS condition. They take the upper part of the stomach and wrap it around the the lower esophagus sphincter (valve), and that stops the acid from traveling up your throat. Thirty thousand dollars later (insurance covered), I have been acid reflux free ever since. I know that sounds drastic, but these conditions seldom ever go away without lot's of help. Mrmarog |
