Post subject:  Question about Folders on Hard Drive

When I get a new disk I copy the whole thing as a folder to my hard drive to keep in order what disc they are off of. Does this slow the computer down when it has to sort through all those folders when I search for a song? Should I just put each file in one big folder or is it ok to keep it like this?

There's no performance lost by having them in multiple directories. Putting them all in one folder theoretically could cause a performance degredation but I doubt you'd notice it. In days gone by there used to be limits on how many files you could have in a folder, with NTFS partitions (and I believe even FAT32, those limits are gone).

It probably won't make a whole lot of difference. I would think that whatever hosting program you are using would not serach the hard drive looking for a file but rather search from a precompiled list on the disk.

On my defunct hoster it worked like this.

1. The master list of file names was updated at startup in case any new files songs had been added.

2. The master list was then sorted into "By Artist" and "By Tittle" lists for scrolling on the kiosks and the main computer. At the end of each line on those two lists was the line number (not displayed) on the master list where the fully qualified path could be found.

3. If a search was done, the program only had to find the matching text in the rather brief list document so it was quick as a bunny.

I suspect that everyone else would have done something like that.

I have a folder that's named Karaoke and all the disc subfolders or files go into that.

If i want to look at them i open the karaoke folder and then find the disc file, open the disc file and find the song files.

The hosting program can find them no matter where they are. Once i mistakenly dragged and dropped one disc file into another disc file. I didn't know it happened. Dumb blond (brunet) moment. The songs would come up from disc number 25 but i couldn't find the file for disc number 25 they were coming from. I remembered i messed with one of the other disc files and i opened it and found the lost disc 25 file. If you can understand what i mean. I copied them out of the file and made a new disc 25 file.

Dumped mine in a wrong folder or sub folder as well. Pain in the butt but system can still find it.

When I rip mine I put it in a folder that has the disc # then that folder is put in a folder that has the Manu's name and all folders are kept in a folder named Karaoke.

Ripping them to separate folders makes it easier to find if you have a problem with the file for some reason (bad rip, missing graphics, etc.).

It also makes it easier to check for dupes.

As far as I've seen it does not slow down the hosting software.

It all depends on the drive specs  Are we talking about a Sata drive? Also is your cpu a duo core?

Ooooppppsss... In my original response I assumed that you were using a hosting program. If you're not then: yes. Keeping songs in different folders will slow down the search. Depending on about a zillion factors you may or may not notice the delay.

Is your laptop equiped with a eSata connection or are you using usb/firewire external connection? USB & Firewire are slow compared to sata, I would upgrade my laptop drive to a 7200 rpm with 16 or 32 meg cache... Seagate has the fastest laptop drive BTW

That computer won't have any search problems. It's powerful enough to find a file next door.

When i rip a disc, a sub folder is cretaed with the disc number as the name. Then you open it to find the song tracks.

Yeah Micky I'm running a Seagate External Sata Drive. Not sure the speed or cache on it though.

That's how I do it now Angel, just wasn't sure if all those folders slowed it down or not.

I suppose if you need to be able to search for a particular disc track, then put them in different individually labeled folders.
I have 1 hard drive dedicated to the music only so the C: is the folder that all goes into. No folders or subfolder.

Don't worry about the speed or cache on an external drive, you're on sata and that's what really makes the difference here 8)
