Do any of you have a substitute for you in case you are gone or does the show shut down that night or does the bar have a back up host on call or does nobody ever miss a night for whatever reason? |

I hire hosts so I could sub if needed. But most of the time I have friends sitting in the aydience that can sit down and run Roxbox and they know our format well enough to fill in. This might seem foreign to most but remember we have done long private parties well into the night and everybody got a turn at hosting. I can sit 12 year olds down and have them hosting in 5 minutes. I'm not saying they are pro but they can keep it going. |

If history repeats itself. Your next sub is your next competitor to buy a illegal hard drive and come back and work for less than you. Case in point look at Portland Oregon and island of pirates. |

You forgot the part about them stealing your music and your gig. but if the owner has no allegience to you then I'm off to bigger and better things. BTW everybody in the bar knows what has happened and is split. It takes awhile to get a crowd back. I have seen cases where it never gets back to the good times. They might last a year or so but they never get a rep good enough to get the good gigs. |

I had a guy trained and he filled in one night for me but I ended up being there. My point being, or question I should have tagged on, was/is the owner ok with your subs? |

RUN............HIDE.........GET YOUR GIG INNOCULATED NOW!!! Kurt I can walk into most gigs in northern Colorado and the owner, singers, and host knows I have a system that will bloow theirs away!! Some are intimidated and fear that I will take over their show. I dont but conduct myself as a pro and help them any way I can as far as system or whatever. I have been to contests and sang to warm up the crowd but never joined the contest. I said no I am a host and dont want anybody to think im a ringer. When I leave I have the utmost respect of everybody concerned. This how you combat piracy and bottom feeders. I dont have to put them in a lower class, they have done that already and will never reach the status of Professional Host esp in a rural area such as here. In larger cities they stick out like sore thumbs to anybody that knows what is going on. |

I have regular hosts that work for me & a couple others that have worked for me that still like to fill in once in a while. I was just on vacation from last Wed to this morning & had all hosts on duty. I have never missed a show to date since 94 - even if it included being sick & not being able to find anyone available to cover me. |

Well they hire my company not necessarily myself. All my hosts are trained the same way & generally can work any night any show. If the bar owner isn't ok with my choice, then I either find another host or I find another bar! I am not necessarily available for every show - especially if you are running multiple systems. |

I have a sub that works for me. I only use her once maybe twice a yr. I've never cancelled a show. If I'm sick and my sub can't fill in I still go to work. Some people joke I'm like the mailman. 3 nights a week without fail. The owner doesn't say boo about it. He prefers for me to be there, but realizes I work every Fri, Sat, and Wed. I need a break too. |

Yeah, me too....if I can't find a sub, I work.....sick, tired, hung over.....I work. I've only had subs about 10-12 times over the past 6 years and only actually missed one show in 6 years due to being hospitalized about 3 hours before the show. Point being.....I need a vacation!! |

The kind of dedication we all seem to have as far as not taking time off can often lead to bad burnout. I worked weekends for years and not too long ago decided that I can't work every weekend, so I cut down to only one weekend night. For sanity's sake, we have to be able to socialize out of our work environment and be able to accept invitations to events, etc., without having to go through a huge ordeal of finding a good sub then worrying that everything will go just as we like it. |

We are in a strange situation where our venue has karaoke 3 nights a week with 3 different companies hosting. If the Friday hosts need a night off then we will do it for them. Or, when the Friday hostess didn't have anyone to carry in her equipment and set it up because her husband was out of town, my boyfriend did it for her rather than take her show. They loaned us their mixer when ours broke. We haven't had to have a sub yet but we would pick the Friday hosts and not the Thursday "Host With the Most" with 100,000 songs who is working for free in order to try and get popular and get our nights. To make it short--no official sub but there are two companies in the area that we could trust to take our night withouth trying to take the job so we mix and match that way. Otherwise, the venue owner brings in a band. |

That worked a couple times for me in the beginning too, but the bar owner realized karaoke brings in more business and costs less. The problem is most events happen on the weekend and I'm always working. My family is pretty cool about planning things on Sundays so I can go, but I'm always dead tired from working until 3am. I'm hoping to win the lottery, so someday I can give up Saturdays. |

We don't want the band as it disrupts the continuity of the karaoke habit. But the owner used to have party til 4 a.m. with the band nights "back in the day" and sometimes he thinks he can bring that back. When we first started he planned to boot us once a month with a live guy. It worked the first month and he had a huge crowd but the second time around the novelty had worn off and he lost his shirt. WE haven't been threatened with that since except if it's something big like the 4th of July but even that didn't pan out as well as he'd hoped. |

I have had bar owners that said if i can't be there they don't want karaoke. So yes some bar owners aren't going to like a sub showing up. They will say i hired you. |
