hello everyone!
My husband, who was a performer and kj host for 20 yrs (who was awesome at what he did) recently and unexpectedly passed away 3 months ago. The club where he ran karaoke for the past 7yrs. asked if I would run his karaoke. OMG! I thought there's no freakin way! I know nothing about what works what, sounds, mics, speakers etc. After giving me as much time as i needed to think about it I thought Michael would be so proud and what a way to carry on his memory. So I decided to give it a try. The first few weeks were great! Then, of course, there are the peeps who take it upon theirselves to reach over and start adjusting dials and buttons (which they would've NEVER done when Michael was there) and eventually distorting every kind of sound there is on the system! The past couple of days have been very stressful because my husband was a perfectionist at his trade and everyone loved him and his talents. I feel like I'm letting my husband down because it sounds like crap! Of course, for now, everyone is being very kind and sweet under the circumstances, but how long is that going last? Not long! That one day is going to come when that "Next American Idol" signs up to sing. Sorry for rambling on but I just don't know what else to do. I will get back to you on all the brands of components etc. I've been searching karaoke help sites for days and this one seems to be the one that I've been looking for. Thank you

mycinni, welcome to the site.
I'm so sorry about your loss. I think it's great the way you're honoring your hubby. The KJ's here are great in giving helpful info I've noticed. Should I ever make the jump to KJ, I know I'll get all the help I'll need right here.
Just so you can be prepared, I imagine they'll want to know what system you're using for the show, and speakers ect... So you may want to write all that down.
Also, check out the tech forums, you'll find help there too.

Welcome to KS.
The number one rule when doing sound is: NEVER let anyone touch your board. NEVER. The only piece of equipment that a singer can touch in the mic. If your singer wants to make some adjustment to the sound they may do it but, YOU need to do it for them.
Learn how to use the equipment; know what those knobs are for. If you have doubt this forum is the right place to ask.

What a story you have. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sure he is so proud of you.
You learn as you go. You will get better and better as you do it. You have found the right place here. Lots of nice, intelligent, helpful folks here.
I agree with Jian. Don't let others touch your board. You are just starting right now, and customers are maybe trying to be helpful, and in that situation it is difficult to find a nice way to tell them no.
I think it's great what you are doing. Good luck to you. Hope to hear more from you soon.

I would post it in the tech section as that is where you'll get the most advice on equipment problems. ONe suggestion is once you get it sounding to where you want it, stand firm and don't let others touch your system.

Practice, Practice, Practice!
Set the system up in your living room, and play with it...a lot. Learn what every knob & dial does, and what effect it has.
You have to train your ear, so you then know what to adjust.

Sorry to hear about your husband, it saddens us anytime we lose a fellow KJ.. we welcome you to our little community and to our (and you late husband's) world.
As for the singers changing your settings... keep a fly swatter handy... maybe make an announcement at the start of the show that the sound has been set for the venue and nobody is authorized to change it, then jokeingly threaten them with a whack if they try!!
