I'd like to hear what everyone's first karaoke song was, and what got you up to sing. My first was "Forever In Blue Jeans" by Neil Diamond. Sitting in a corner dive, karaoke run by the bar owner, TERRIBLE singers, but ALL having fun. One guy seemed to know ALL of my FAVORITE songs, and was MURDERLIZING every one of them. I had never sung karaoke before, although I had played and sang a few times in bars. I had a few shots of liquid courage, and said to myself, "you CAN'T do any worse than that guy is doing. So, I put my name on the list, and paid my dollar to sing. Yeah, it cost a dollar a song to sing. Needless to say, I sang my song, and have been hooked ever since. Well, this is mine, WHAT'S YOURS? About 1994, I was at the fair in Jefferson City -- (I think it was the county fair) and as I wondered around I came upon a guy who was running karaoke. Everything was sitting on one of those 8 foot tables. Nobody was singing and there weren't any people hanging around the area at all. What had drawn my attention was the t.v. screen. I went over and asked him what he was demonstrating or doing and he explained it all to me and showed me one of his song books. I asked him how much it cost to sing one of the songs and was totally amazed and delighted when he said it was FREE! So I had him put in "Love Me Tender" and gave it a shot. I finished singing the song and suddenly there was the sound of applause coming from behind me. I turned around and there was a small crowd of people who had been watching me -- I was so into the song that I didn't even know they were there! I scurried away embarrassed by the attention, but also very happy that people had liked my song. I was hooked for life! |

Might have been 8 or more years ago. I used to accompany my friend who was an excellent singer but I was one who even lip-synched "Happy Birthday" for 40 plus years. Would never sing anything anywhere. After about a year of watching others sing I decided I wanted to do it just once, sort of like a Bungee Jump thing to say I had done it. But I knew I couldn't sing so I decided to distract with a costume. I practiced Jimmy Buffett's "Volcano," for weeks before and almost got to thinking I could actually sing it. When my name was called, I threw off my coat and was wearing a sarong with a crab bra (anyone can do coconuts) and a flower wreath with a parrot on my head that I lit up with a battery pack. The host looked more worried than amused. The music started and I was shocked by the sound of something really terrible coming out of the monitor in front of me. I kept singing louder and louder trying to overcome it until I realized that terrible sound was me and I had escalated into an atomic explosion of terrible singing. I couldn't find the key (later realized I should have upped it 4) and so just started shouting out the words and making strange comments. But oddly enough I got a good response and immediately succumbed to Applause Addiction. The next day I was ordering take-out at a Mexican Restaurant and it turned out the cook had been there for my "performance." "We enjoyed WATCHING you," he said. "Maybe you should stick to INSTRUMENTALS." The rest is history. |

LL, that's just TOOOOO funny. How did you get the courage to put on the costume? When I was reading, I thought you were going to say that the speaker was bad, or something, but when you said it was YOU, I couldn't stop laughing. Hope I get alot of good stories on this thread. Thanks for yours, and thanks for ALL the others, GOOD STUFF. Srnitynow |

BigJer, that took alot of cohones to get up for your first karaoke experience at a county fair. Especially since nobody else was singing. Don't think I would have ventured that far. You've got my respect. Srnitynow |

I had sung my whole life, mostly in school, church, and community events. We didn't have anywhere that did karaoke. I came to the beach with my mom for the week-end and decided that I would like to try karaoke. I was sure I would find somewhere that did it. I walked into a show, very nervous about trying something different, but excited, and I sang "Old Time Rock n Roll". I loved it. I started coming back every chance I got to sing at this same show. The couple that hosted it loved it when I came in. One week-end they introduced me to their son. I ended up marrying him, and 8 years and two beautiful children later, I am doing my own show on the same Boardwalk I started singing karaoke on. They haven't been doing shows in years. Now, I am the longest running show on the Boardwalk. It's kind of cool!! |

Good stories, All! Mine was Friends in Low Places, sung to a vitually empty bar in Renton, WA. It was the live version of the song with the extra verse, which I wasn't familiar with, and when it got to the spoken part I said like WHATTT?!! I thought I knew this song! A few weeks later I tried the Spinners Rubberband Man, which I also total flubbed. The sailing has been smoother since then, though still some choppy waters sometimes. |

First public one, I believe, was Blue Kentucky Girl (Emmylou Harris)... at a Christmas Party for my hubby's work. (karaoke with a bunch of drunk truck drivers, ooh yeah...) Quote: My first was "Forever In Blue Jeans"
For years, that was the only song of ND's I knew, and has always been my fav of his. Dang, but that's a great song you never hear anyone sing. |

Breakdown, Tom Petty. I had done that song in my car so many times, including that day so it was fresh in my mind. We were shooting pool at the bar, and my friends dared me to put in a song... including an attractive lady. Isn't it always about a girl?? Anyway, I did the song, (pretty good applause that attributed to everyone being nice) came back and sat down. Everyone asked me when I was going to sing. I looked at them weird and explained that I already did sing... tom petty, breakdown. They didn't believe me and insisted that the KJ had just played the song... until the girl came in and verified that is was me singing. \ Of course, with that experience I had to try it again... |

BlueStainedShoes, if you ever get to the upper midwest, come to one of my shows, and I'll sing it for you. One of the artist I can still sing is Neil Diamond, even when the breathing isn't great. Srnitynow |

I don't remember exactly, I started doing karaoke around 1990. It may have been "Take Me To The River" by the Talking Heads. Was that out on Pioneer Laserdisc? --Tad |
