Post subject:  Laughlin Karaoke Contests Part Deux

Well, I witnessed a Karaoke contest this past weekend..

It seems I have mixed emotions.. regarding contests in general and this one in particular.

I spoke with a few of the contestants, and they all had some issues that were troubling.

Re: Talent?, yes there was talent.. Without question..

Should all of the contestants been allowed to travel across the US to sing?

I guess the vote is out on that question.. and really, it's not my call..

Let me get my thoughts together and finish this later, after I sing a few in the shower.

JD, are you referring to the National Karaoke Talent Competition in Laughlin Nevada?

I know of 3 people from hawaii that went there this week for that. :D

I have 4 people from my shows who are competing in Talent Quest in Nevada. Three of them are out already, not sure about the 4th yet. One of the three that are out made it to the top 20 in male country. But don't know about the last guy. Hope he is doing well.

Wow, people will travel a long way to sing karaoke, huh? Suppose if there's money at stake it's a bit more understandable though...

I'm assuming people had to prequalify for the big event. Maybe they won plane tickets?

Acutally, nope, all they won when they pre-qualified was the entry fee of (i believe) $250. The biggest thing that they "could" win is the chance of a recording contract. But, we all know how unlikely a contract is. Most people are unaware of how much time and money the singer themselves pays for the "contract" and production.

But still good bragging rights if you place high enough or even win a competition like this one.

Sorry to burst anyones bubble, but Priddis is no longer in Utah. They moved the entire operation to England a few short years ago. They used to be based in Pleasant Grove, Utah, only about an hour from where I live. So if they were offered tickets to the Priddis Studios, that would be a good, and worth while prize. The only person still in Utah is the owner himself. He used to do everything out of his basement, then upgraded to a studio behind his house. But eventually the copyright fees got to high, so he moved everything to England.

Mr. Priddis was there, and a judge and was firm that the jaunt was to Utah.. Maybe to his basement studio?

Was wondering if that's all they were offering for prizes tho. Would have been funny if the one gal that was from my show had of won the thing, do they give round trip air fare tickets for 8 miles???

You can "Google" the contest to find a list of prizes..

What I saw was a table of plastic "Trophy Like" thingies, and they announced $1000 for first, 500 for second and 250 for third.

Fourth and fifth got zero cash.. Just the plastic Jesus..

The primary promoter seems to be from Florida.. (I saw the name on a sign-up sheet)

Chartbuster, Vocopro, Priddis, and a CD vendor.. all kicked in something.

Vocopro gave a small player, CB a "Set", Priddis some disks and the "Sleepover" in Utah..

Travel a long way for a karaoke show? Hmmm, that sounds like a great idea for a "road trip" movie! Oh wait, they made that already... "Duets". Lol.

Hard to believe that a top show like that had such sound issues.

Priddis still is in business. The recording studio is still in operation in Lindon, UT.
Priddis does not do CDG anymore because of the licensing fees involved in producing karaoke tracks. Their library of music that is licensable for audio is available through ProSound Music, audio only at singprosound.com
