So, I'm thinking of dumping my bar karaoke nights (2 weekly) and trying to gear all of my efforts to KJ'ing private events, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. How would you suggest marketing for that?

Currently I run ads on Craigslist and have started contacting wedding planners. Any other ideas?

Wow Kai,
this one could be tough.

If your primary goal is just to stop working those gigs, just stop doing them
Actually what I'd recommend doing is get a 2nd system and a back up KJ. Work the regular gigs as much as you can and if you get a private booking, YOU Book that take more money (since it's a private show) and have your replacement come in for a night.

That way you don't loose the next weeks gig when you DON"T have a show booked.

The Marketing of the other shows is a lenghty topic but could be broken down to the basics of
1) Find the market you want to persue
2) Generate Leads
3) convert those leads to sales
4) have them re-book or refer.

I prefer direct mail to obtain all my clients. It takes less time, cost me a stamp and save me tons of leg work, traffic time and meeting people who aren't interested.

Kai, what is the market you would like to persue?

Themes.

Work out different Themes.
Something I am toying with at the moment.

Been working on a horror one.
Sadly they think I'm too scary as it is. :(

If you want to go this route, I would suggest advertising karaoke OR DJ. You will get more business as a DJ at private parties in my opinion and one good thing about DJing is there isn't nearly as much to haul or set up. And if you are only there to DJ, if your set up is computer hosting, you can always do a song right from your booth if needed.

At least in my area, not enough call for private karaoke shows. I've done 3 (not counting charity or high school events) since I started back in March.
