I excerpted from a post on another site because it made me curious.

Does anyone here have any experience with this? Has anyone even heard of this tool? And especially for those of you who may be technically advanced in this digital realm, what might your thoughts be on any possible advantages (or disadvantages) this may provide?

I would like to suggest a nifty little piece of software that I've found
indispensable when running karaoke hosting software. It's called GameMode
and is a freebee at:
http://download.cnet.com/GameMode/3000- ... 07864.html
Although it was designed for games that are huge resource hogs, I've found
it ideal to ensure no crashes and smooth running of a show. This software
will simply look at your computer's running processes, save them in a list
(ignoring the essential windows or system processes), kill (close) all the
non-essential process (non-systematic).
You start it up just before you start up your hosting software. When you
finish, click on Return to Normal Mode, and your ex-session is back.
…GameMode will make more memory and resources available.
It's very easy to install and uninstall if you don't like it and so simple
to use, one click on and one click off.

I have it, it came with my Advanced window care program. Although I've never used it for Karaoke, it performs quite well for games.

I also have a Sound Blaster sound card, which gives me the ability to switch between
Entertainment, Game and Audio Creation Mode.
With a Quad Processor, using Entertainment Mode, I never have a need to switch to Game Mode.

I'm sure it would help slower PC'S.

After seeing this post I dl this little (and I mean little) program.
Have been testing and it appears to do just what it claims to do however I have noticed a few things...not really an issue to me once I understood what was going on.

1) When selecting "Game Mode On" it does close all unnecessary running apps however the icons in the notification area do not immediatly go away but if you run your mouse curser over the notification area they immediatly disappear.
(It appears to take 30-45 seconds to close everthing down, but I may be wrong here)

2) If you also close the Game Mode program you no longer have the ability to restore to normal..however rebooting/restarting brings everthing back to normal.
For me...after a show I shut down the laptop anyway so this is not an issue however if you think it would be an issue for you then just minimize the program and don't close it.

If I notice anything else I will post.
