Saw Oprah yesterday and Journey was on her show. The new lead singer was discovered on Youtube by one of the guys in the band; he is from abject poverty in the Phillipines, and he used to "sing for his supper" literally. Talk about a dream come true. And he's GOOOD!

Didn't see him on Oprah, but I have seen him before, closest to Steve Perry voice I've heard. Evidently the group thought so too.

I remember when this happened. I thought it was amazing. The actual story of how it went down is a really good one.
Apparently, when citizens are leaving the Philippines, they are scrutinized and might not be let out.
When he was leaving the country to go for the audition in LA, they almost didn't let him out of the country when they asked him where he was going. They didn't believe him when he told them he was going to audition for Journey.!
The border worker asked him to sing to prove it so he started singing. Then another worker confirmed his story that he DID sing Journey songs for a living... They had seen him perform very recently .
They let him go. Great story and very exciting when it was all happening.

Saw Journey on Ellen. This guy is amazing. If I remember right, he is early 40s? Rest of the band is late 50s? He's been singing for years. Youtube was his big break. Word has it, he will fight Kimbo Slice next week!

Saw them doing "Don't Stop Believing" on coverage of the Download Festival and the guy did a great job!

I'm glad Journey went the route of trying to find a lead that can sing the songs as they were originally intended to sound. All too often you see these older bands switch singers and then completely change their sound in the process.

I was really disappointed when I saw Queen with their new frontman. I know they were purposely trying to get a different sound vocally, for whatever reason, but it just didn't feel right.

Boston found their new lead singer on MySpace. See the link below:

I loveo PR but I don't think he fits with Queen, which is why they've made the change. Adam Lambert would be PERFECT but he's got a huge solo career ahead of him.

Paul Rodgers doesn't fit any more than Sammy Hagar or Nuno Bettencourt fit with Van Hagar, I mean Van Halen.

I believe you're thinking of Gary Cherone... :D
