So last night I had a couple (guys actually) at my show who are very new to the karaoke scene - the one who sang has been a music afficionado for years - not singing but really enjoying being on the listening end of music - seriously knows about almost every song that has ever been done, knows a lot of trivia, is very familiar with artists. He, however, was PETRIFIED to get up and sing. With much soft prompting, etc., from me, he finally did get up. WOW. What a fabulous job he did.

I am writing this because as a long-time host, I still find it extremely gratifying to give someone a great first experience with singing in public. His partner was almost in tears which told me that this was something the singer had been wanting to do for a very long time and last night finally got up the nerve. The new singer thanked me and thanked me over and over again, and sent me a facebook message when he got home expressing his gratitude for my part in his singing liberation. I am so grateful that my room is one where everyone is accepting and supportive of ALL singers, no matter their skill level or ability.

Once in a while I feel like taking my equipment and dropping it off on the next corner -- you know, dealing with a lot of CRAP with singers or owners or whatever ... But nights like last night bring it back home for me. I feel different today, and it's a good thing.

It's a beautiful thing to witness a new convert suddenly take joy in singing!

Karen That's a wonderful story.

You've done a great job encouraging a friendly atmosphere and being as sweet as you are, How could he say no.

Some people need more coaxing than others. To get me to sing all you have to do is have cake. :D

The saga continues - I get a f/b message from my new singer yesterday with 36 songs on it! He asked me to let him know which ones I have and which ones I don't. He is coming to our show tonight to start building his repertoire. I've created a MONSTER!

Oh girl - I think you have created a monster. LMAO I know the type. These type of monsters usually are very loyal to a point. They're always very demanding and talk mainly only about themselves and karaoke. As long as you constantly answer all their wims they stick around. The minute you say I'm sorry I don't have time to go through your 30 page list to pick your songs for you, they aren't as loyal. Just my experience any way. Good luck :D

Would you believe he has installed software and is now downloading his own music? YAAAAY! I don't have to buy it for him. I don't think he'll stray too far from our shows (hubby has one, I have two) for a while yet but he is dead-on serious about singing, and the nice thing is, he's a very decent singer with a lot of potential to become VERY good.

He's not the type to suck the life out of me ... which is a good thing, but thanks for the heads up, Babs - nothing like experience talking!

Had a great time tonight sitting with my newest convert at hubby's show. No, I still have life in me, we're becoming great friends. He respects my advice and experience, and has asked me to help him choose songs ... that's about it, though.

Training the newbies LMAO

I find that most new regulars have to be trained. Not all. It takes them a while to learn the rules and that I don't bend.

I think it comes down to respect, Babs. And it is easier to train someone than to have to break bad habits. What is really good about this new singer is he has a lot of friends who will support him in his efforts - which means people who've never been to either of our show venues will bring much needed economic support, too. Can't beat that!

I love when a newbie starts bringing in friends.

I have these 3 twenty somethings that have become regulars. Really nice boys.
They have started to bring in friends, girlfriends, even parents. When they brought in their frat brothers I thought it was going to be a rough night, but to my surprise they were all very respectful. One of them even asked me if it was okay to sing a song that had a swear word in it - so cute.
