After the death of a local woman from Swine Flu this week, I decided to step up my routine disinfection of mics. I bought some Lysol disinfecting wipes and I wiped off the mics after every single singer. Previously, I was cleaning mics after the show at home, so no one saw it. At my Thursday show, it was very visible and obvious what I was doing. I was handing mics over that were still wet from the wipes, but no one minded (Careful! They're slippery when wet!). In fact, I got several compliments and thanks for it. I was also told by one customer that so far, my show was the only one taking this preventative measure. There are two other shows in town, one on another night, and I know for a fact that at that show on the other night, the mics are NEVER cleaned. I suspect the same applies to the other show on Thursday. Yuck!!! With the number of compliments and thanks I got regarding this, I am hoping for two things to come out of it: 1. The singers will notice, word will spread, and I will get more singers at my show (of COURSE I'm hoping for that!) 2. More importantly, the other shows will start to look at their own hygiene practices and start doing something about it. Filthy mics are not only disgusting, they are potentially DEADLY. What are you doing to help prevent H1N1, if anything? Or are you doing nothing but your regular maintenance, if any? (What is your regular maintenance, or do you do nothing at all?) |

Hey diafel, I'm doing the same thing these days. I wipe the mics off between singers and EVERYBODY seems to appreciate it. Nobody seems to mind they're a little wet. Mojo |

For years now, I clean the mics before the show begins with sanitizer. I also do it periodically throughout the show, and always if i see it touch a singer's mouth. They are very nasty, especially if they aren't cleaned. |

Ill be honest. I don't clean them often . less so in the winter as they freeze between shows. in the warm weather they are a science project in the foam. unfortunately wiping off the outside of the screen really only helps take the germs off the surface. soaking them in disinfectant is really the only thing that really kills the germs. that ends up wrecking the foam after a while.. H1n1 is really kinda a joke, there was a swine flu scare in the 70s. it went away when the news gave up on it. if you read up on it the death rate for swine flu is almost exactly the same as the normal flu that we have all had. and the symptoms really arent any worse. for most people not as bad.Im not saying i dont believe in hygiene is a good thing. there is no question that doing something is better than nothing, but karaoke mics are always going to be germ infested. |
